Default Very confused on oil choice?

Looking at changing the oil on my 2005 sti type UK and I find it mad how many different oil viscosities people recommend?

Am I right in that the factory oil is 5w 30 fully synthetic, then I've been recommended to use 15w 50, 10w 60, 10w 40, coming from an m3 where the oil is 10w 60 or nothing I'm proper confused??

Any input on the correct oil for a 2005 sti type UK with 97,000? Thanks to folks who have helped in previous posts

as std on that car i would use a good quality 5w40 BUT if heavily modded or driven aggressively trackday style then i would vary the grade

we carry most high quality options on the shelf at very competitive pricing if your stuck 0191-4103770

Ok thanks, I am thinking of a remap in the future , (330-340bhp) and at the moment the car has the the PPP pack on so 305bhp, and I have a previous invoice for the servicing at subaru for u using 15w 50?

I wonder why bottom ends keep blowing on these cars with all the confusion of oil choice?

I run 5w-40 for daily road use, you want it to flow easy when cold especially this time of year.

I'd only run 15w-50 on massive power setups or trackday use.

Your best bet is to speak to Opie oils and they'll take into account your setup and usage to provide the best option, 90% sure they'll say 5w-40.

Thanks for that Ben and you're right, I would recommend a good 5w-40.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul Sport/300V, Red Line and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XF Longlife, Castrol Edge/Magnatec, Fuchs GT1 XTL/Supersyn, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

Cheers

Like per oilman , 5w-40 is good choice. However if you drive it hard, or you see it ueses quite a lot of oil, then go 10w50 Millers.

I have quite a heavy foot and 5w40 I was topping up like crazy, almost made me think engine is f*cked. Went over to Millers 10w50 and now I barely even have to top up between oil changes.

Cheers chaps, really appreciate the input.

I did order a good 5w 40 but after my good pal rang mark at TDR in Warwick I've gone with 15w 50 Fuchs race r, he said that the 5w40 would be a bit thin and I'd be topping up, used a roger clarke filter also.

I've literally just changed the oil as well!

Thanks for the input chaps.

I've literally just done the oil change and ordered 5w40 but my good pal rang mark at TDR and he recommended 15w 50 and he said on 5w 40 I'd be topping up so I used the Fuchs race r, also a roger clarke filter.

Really appreciate the help, still can't believe the different range of oils that I've looked at putting in the car, on m3cutters it's 10w60 for m cars or it goes bang!

if its a 2.5 then he "may" have a point but even then on a road car you will be perfectly fine with a good quality 5w40

on a 2.0 car its highly unusual for them to use oil.............

I wouldn't use 15w-50 for a daily driver, the oil will be thick like honey.
If you are worried about oil consumption I'd use 10w-50.

I remember having a 330d that was mapped a few years back and i'm sure the standard oil was 5w50 and it did use a tiny bit of oil, like half a litre in 5000! changed to 10w50 and the oil level didn't budge, put 100,000 miles on it and it still pulled like a train and didn't use a drop.

Hi

Standard grade for a 330D is 0w-30 or 5w-30, 5w-40 and 0w-40 can also be used. 5w-50 or 10w-50 are too thick unless it's pretty heavily modified.

Cheers

Yeah thanks, i think i moved from 5w30-5w40 which halted the oil consumption to 0 in 12,000 miles, was quite a while ago now
