Default strange engine noise.

My 2005 WRX wagon makes a strange noise that I can only describe as a sort of whiring sound...a little bit like something off the jetsons. Its generally louder when cold, and sometimes when warm it goes completely. My head is telling me it might be something to do with the belts, but my problem is, if it is a belt, I don't know why it'd make this noise. Possibility of them being too tight perhaps? I've not been close enough to any other imprezas to know if this is perhaps a noise they all make. I just want to make sure it isn't something I need to do something about.

Hmmm 86 views. I thought seeing as most people here drive imprezas, that someone could tell me if a funny whiring noise is normal or not. I cant think of any other way to describe it. It's definitely something rotational as it rises in pitch with the revs. I dont want to go fiddling to see if a pully is faulty, if its just a normal noise and i need to learn to ignore it.

Any views would be appreciated.

Is it related to steering angle and force? I tend to get a whirring on my 07 Hawk STI when going round a right hand bend but not a left hand, API said it was a belt but I cant remember which, probably power steering pulley. Seems to be a similar noise as you describe.

Post up a recording; anything else is random guesswork in cars that make so much and so many noises; I currently have 3 unidentified noises on my blob wagon, but mechanically it is sound

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated. I cant say as i notice it more when steering tbh. But that's interesting that the same/similar noise does come from a pully. My noise is much more audible from in the car. Ill try and see if i can catch it on a recording.

Ye get a recording, will make it easier to diagnose.
Is it only inside the car you can hear it? Can you hear it in the engine bay with bonnet up?
Is it making the noise on idle or just when driving?

I had a noise similar to what you describe it was the power steering pump running low on fluid, there was a leak that I hadn't noticed... Topped up PS fluid and fixed the leak and it went away! This is on a classic though not an 07.
