Default Warning lights... warning lights everywhere

Please excuse my lack of technical ability.

This is on a 57 hatchback impreza wrx with no engine mods I'm aware of.

I've done quite a few miles today, and when I've been crawling or reversing there's been a rattling noise. Now it seems to be making it irregularly but a lot more frequently just while I'm driving along. And now my engine management light and the traction control (i think) warning lights have come on along with the cruise control flashing at me.

Obviously I haven't been giving it any but performance doesn't seem to be lacking.

Does any one have any ideas please (would rather not go to a dealer to get it read and pay a small fortune)

Many thanks in advance,
Ewen

Right turns out my friend has one of the readers...

3 codes:

P0011 #07E8 A camshaft postion timing over - Advanced or system performance bank 1
P0011 #07E8pd Same description as above
P0302 #07E8pd Cylinder 2 misfire detected

I've been looking around and a lot of the suggestions for the first code are to do with low oil - just check and wouldn't you know it low oil.

The second I'm not sure if this is something that could be caused by the first code. I've reset the lights so if it starts to do it again I can tell.

But I guess my real question is should this be ok to drive with a top up of oil and a proper service in the near future (haven't changed the oil or filter since I bought it 6 months ago) or any ideas of a more serious fault going on?

I checked when I bought the car and it was fine. Then checked yesterday when this all happened and it was very low. (Now regret not checking more often as I'm sure the dealers would of looked gone and oh bugger should probably top that up)

Once in six months is a bit of an oversight! That said a healthy engine shouldn't be using that much oil between changes. With it being the 2.5 and such oil usage I'd get a leak down and compression test done.

Cheers for the advice, will have a test done asap, one of those things youve got to learn from I guess, hopefully it hasnt done any damage!

The 2.5s use roughly a litre a month if driven average miles.

HUGE generalisation that!!!

My wife's 2.5 hatch WRX does not use any oil, even after 90,000 miles.

My forged 2.5 does not use any oil after 40,000 miles running 500bhp.

*SOME* 2.5 stock engines *may* use some oil.

YMMV.

1L per 1000 is the point of concern, not the norm. not sure where you got that from rb5 stu.
