Default EE20 Diesel conrod bolts, special tool?

I'm dismantling my EE20 because the crankshaft broke; I've got to the point where I need to undo the connecting rod / big end bolts, but I'm stuck because I don't have a tool to fit them. Has anyone had to undo these and, if so, where did you get the tool to fit?

They look like an E10 or E12 socket from a pic I just looked at? Can buy those in halfords.

I tried an E10 but it didn't fit properly, and it cammed off when I tried to remove a bolt; the tops of the splines on the bolts are a lot flatter and the splines don't taper as much as the Torx pattern that the E series sockets use.

Have you tried a 12 sided socket? My old Saab engine had those kind of bolts, and they kind of look like external torx, but not quite.
