Mine is never drained.
I have come to accept that only a certain percentage of the oil will come out during an oil change.

You can disengage your lines from the sandwich plate ( let them hang ) my cooler sits at the front & the fittings are at the bottom ...
I know your's is fitted at the side. Are your lines at the bottom of cooler ?

If you've drained it though do you prefill the cooler? Otherwise when the stat opens it will flow air into the system rather than oil won't it?

If your fittings are at the bottom then all the oil inside the cooler will drain back into the sump once you switch the engine off and then it has to be refilled again when you restart ?

i pretty much guessed this was the case, just checking what other people do really.
it doesnt hold too much oil so in comparison to the sump anyway.
