Default Cabin engine noise

I have a 98' STi and wondering whether the engines are noisy from inside the car? Its like you can hear everything bloody working its almost like a constant noise from the moment the engine is turned on at idle to when its on the move.

I get the feeling sometimes the noise is from the gearbox as when you steer to the right the noise tends to go away so it almost points me to a worn diff bearings or the like? Although this is my 2nd DCCD box and they have both done it so was under the assumption it couldn't happen to two boxes although never to rule it out I guess. When at idle you sometimes almost get like a very very light knocky thud type of noise which can only be heard in the car. If I poke my head under the car next to the sump its fine.

I also get 'clutch thrash' when im decelerating which causes this horrible grinding type noise is this just rectified by a change of clutch? It currently has a Pink Box Exedy clutch in it.

I understand it's an old car with mechanical diffs and old technology when comparing it to new cars but I've never been out in another Type R bar my own so it's all new to me and has been this way since I've bought the car over a year ago but It's starting to bug me! Any ideas?

Exedy Pink Box. I've also replaced the pilot bearing in the flywheel as I thought it could have been that.

afraid if u want a quiet refined drive, you need a bm or similar, its an impreza and noise is one of their traits. . if you need it quiet , you could try and fit some underbonnet soundproofing

Im not bothered about it being loud, I'm just trying to find out if that generally is just a trait of the old EJ20 engines or if there is something wrong with my car. If its the latter then I will be bothered about it being loud lol.

The type R and RA have no soundproofing you tend to hear a lot more, saying that I have a MY97 RA and it's far from loud,I have a pretty quiet exhaust system and standard clutch.
If you have a full decat zorst then you certainly will here the rumble of the sweet flat 4 a bit more.
What tyres are you running on? My sister bought some for here civic and you can't even hear the stereo now lol

Exedy have been known to be noisey.

I have one in my spec c but again no sound deadening so you can hear everything.

I change my oil with Millers 10w-50 every 6-7k miles. My gearbox oil has been changed to Millers 75w-90 also and I check my levels regularly so its not that.

Tyres were R888 and now running Dunlop DZ03 but the tyre noise is completely different from what the engine noise is. Its not exhaust noise either I can tell the difference as I am a mechanic to trade. Im just unsure whether there is a noisy bearing somewhere in the gearbox or the engine unless it is just a very noisy engine but it doesn't exactly sound like it would have rolled out the factory sounding the way it does.

I may just look into changing the clutch then. I've read on NASIOC and RS25 that the Pink box clutches do cause a fair bit of noise when on deceleration but then others on here complain of no noise so unsure where to go. Having said that the noise is still consistently there when driving and accelerating. Like I said, don't want to go throwing money at it if that's just generally how they sound.

I have a 2004 with a pink exedy clutch in

And honestly I can't relate to any of what you say mate.

I mean engine isn't as quite as a mouse, but it certainly isn't noisey and how you discribed
