Default spare pipe...

i've just had a new gearbox, clutch et al dropped into my baby BUT have got her back with a pipe (mate recons it's a recirculating pipe) poking out and looking lost. i have a few issues with this...

1. it looks silly sausage chops!
2. the place where it looks to go (up near the top mount intercooler), when fitted causes the engine to go lumpy and gashflaps on idle
3. the place where it looks to go... when it's not there, doesn't cause the engine to go proper lumpy like on idle and am wondering if this may cause any unseen issues?

*really big and awesome thank you hugs in advance*.
XXXOOO.

does it come from under the inlet going into a metal pipe then into the inlet pipe near turbo end?

That's the recirc valve. Does the blue pipe that runs up and over the coil pack go anywhere? That should be connected to it!

If it's not the blue one then the black one that's next to it!

As above the black and blue pipes are the same source. One should go to the recirc valve and the other would be blanked off as standard but is usually used for a boost gauge. You need to trace where those two pipes go. The recirc needs a vacuum source which it doesn't currently have. If one of those pipes is just not connected to anything you will also have a boost/vacuum leak.

thank you so far everyone for all your awesome help and advice... i am going to have a rummage under the coil pack (thank you cutmastert) and see if the wrong pipe is in the wrong hole? i have had a look online for other scooby engine bays and that looks to be the answer.

Perhaps try find someone in your area with same year as yours and check theirs. Only thing I can think of doing unless you take it into a garage.

cutmastert: she's being looked at tomorrow after work by one of my mechanic friends have driven her this evening with no real issues, just a horrible idle and cut out before the turbo timer finishes.
matthewturb2000: both pipes are now connected. i can't see anywhere else the blue pipe goes apart from the nippley recirc valve bit BUT i did bump into another scooby owner this evening and he pipped up "yeah, change your coil pack! it's f*cked. i've done mine a few times!"... well, why not i guess? i did the maf sensor before it went in for her new bits and bobs. pictures would be awesome thank you

Fairly sure that it doesn't.... Not on that model year. There is no nipple below the ICV. One of those nipples on the inlet is blanked off as standard.

How did this person tell that your coil pack needed changing? Mine is fine after 14 years.... The single coil packs don't really go wrong often! Just be careful of people giving advice. There are a lot of people who think they know but are ill informed (not aimed at anyone in particular).

Deep pockets? If you go with the might as well change it approach with Subaru sensors and coils etc you can spend £1000's for new OE items. The ICV for example was £260 at a last check! You definitely need a DECENT specialist to take a look. A good Subaru specialist will be able to try other parts on your car to see if they sort the problem. A general mechanic will guess and you may end up spending hundreds chasing the problems around.

It is especially a problem on these cars as people mod them (often poorly) and you end up with a car where everything has been changed and messed around with.

fmj: the pipes all go somewhere funny although i think the black one does hoof off towards the boost gauge? with a big bob marley in his mouth (thus caution was taken when i listened). i know, this is why i'd prefer to triple check with the things i know not much about j.xo.
fmj: not deep pockets, but they are needed! i got round to seeing my mechanic friend... there's a hole in a pipe "somewhere" that needs to be traced! *facepalm*. we can hear it when the bonnet is up and we know roughly where it is but it's going to be a right donkey licker to get to and fix! j.xo.
