Default TD05 16g waste gate Pressure ?

Hello together , I have MY05 WRX with
255lph/550c/Prodrive exhaust/JGM tune and TD05 16G (aftermarket ).

Since Simon tuned this I have always been down a bit on boost .
( Map calls for 1.2 bar ) but I am only making only 1-1.05bar.

His advice was to check for boost leaks/WG pretension. Or to fit a 3 port control. ( which I may still do ) and get back to him for a re-tune.

Whilst tracking this down , I have eliminated all the boost leaks and I did find a few, and checked WG Pre-tension but nothing has helped.

Finally I tested the WG actuator and to my horror I find it starts to open at 0.25 bar. (my fault for buying a cheapy , but budget was important).

Ok so , Can anyone tell me what WG pressure they should be opening at for a TD05 16G ?

And what opening pressure would be best when still using std ECU/ boost controller ?

Thanks Linksfahrer

If it helps at all the TD04 cracks at 7 psi (0.5 Bar) and is at full travel at 15 psi (1 Bar). Sorry i've never tested a 05 actuator

Hi Eddie , Thanks this really helps me to know.

So I can use my old TD04 actuator as a start. That's at least going to improve things on crack open from 0.25 to 0.5 bar ( I'll just have to do a small mod by bending the mounting to get it on).

I forgot to mention I also have a pretty big TMIC
( I m thinking here that keeping the WG shut longer may help spool up)

So anyone else got experience to say what the best opening pressure would be on the TD05 16g / > Sti 8 TMIC, before I roll over to JGM for re-tune ? Cheers Linksfahrer

Well Eddie

I fitted my old TD04 Actuator to aftermarket TD05 16g !!! And what a result !!

I have gone from a poor spool and just 1 bar boost to a better spool up and !! 1.6 bar boost. !! thats 23 psi

So this is the difference to hold the WG shut a bit longer.

So anyone with TD05 16G from CX racing with low boost development should check the Actuator and try to get away from 0.25 bar already opening it.

Still I am now a touch worried about the map from JGM as it certainly was not aimed at 1,6 bar. But I do have Aral 102 octane here so detonation seems not be an issue. ( I hope )

Looks like now i have to find a MBC to knock off a bit of boost and get myself back to JGM

I'm glad it helped. I think the map now needs a tweak to the boost solenoid duty cycles to bring it under control.

Just out of interest, how much actuator preload are you using?

About 3 mm . I read somewhere that was a good start to avoid it bouncing about. Thanks again for your tip . Ralph

Default Added MBC and set alarm on Cabin boost gauge.

After the 3 mm WG preload , I have just added a presure control valve in line with the WG and took the restrictor pill out prior to WG so its bleeding off the excess boost , I have set it a to do that at 1.4 bar (20 psi) venting to air.

Just for a check I ran a pipe from the outlet into the cabin and checked that it bleeds off with my thumb and interestingly It does start to open before the 20 psi setting. Judging by the boost gauge through the gears Im not exceeding 1.4 bar now, (feel better for that).

I also set my cabin gauge to alarm at 1.5 bar ( 22psi ) just in case
then I will know if the MBC fouls up.

So its safe for the moment untill I can get over to see JGM. Regs Ralph

Ralph did you notice removing the restrictor pill didn't affect spool up time?

How's the car going bud?

Good question , no the pill seemed to make little or no difference to spool time. It only made a minor difference to top boost. Simon and I "were" chating about the remap based on the new WG actuator , which I had 3 various springs to check opening at 0,8 1,0 or 1.2 bar. He said the WG actuator on the Aftermarket TD05 would open likely too fast so extra preload was just masking this. The car is off road with a spun bearing, the MBC jammed , the alarm went off , took just a second to do the damage, I should have waited untill I had the new Kinguwa waste gate on , ( was stuck in customs for VAT to be paid.) Im now saving for some forged pistons , and will need another to finish Simon's map , He even mentioned Bob Rawle's name to me , So I think he knew already it was not to be. Sadly I will never see him again.

So you got bad over-boost? Mine was doing it after the last turbo fitted split the vac hose. Ironically the original fitter of the turbo left me with a water leak so in both cases I could have damaged the engine! The wife rectified both tuners mistakes.

I booked Sim for the 16th of last month for a map but he couldn't make it due to needing the docs. He actually offered to come later in the day after his appointment but I just said to him come when you are ready.

There's a funny side to that Quote

In my case I changed out the wife , and bought a bike too.

maybe that's why Im saving for new forged internals.

TBH I wish Subaru "specialists" were more thorough than my wife with their hands!
