Gauges of metal?
Morning all,
Basically I want to buy a small amount of sheet metal (maybe a metre square?) to keep in the garage, probably aluminium or stainless steel.
Every time I need to 'make' something, it usually involves butchering something I have lying around into something functional but not exactly aesthetically pleasing. I'd rather have some sheet metal I can work with and make proper brackets for things but I have no idea what gauge I'd want or where to buy it. I'm assuming something like 3mm thick would work for most applications but just wondered what everyone else uses etc.
Any advise appreciated!
Adam

You should have stock holders or engineering shops around you that can supply some off cuts or sheets you can buy. I say off cuts as they usually come in 8x4 sheets and in alu or stainless they can be quite pricey. 3mm would be good for most applications under the engine bay but thinner for making covers for fuse box etc. stainless is the best as plain alu will oxidise and for a powder on it after a very short time unless treated or laquered.
