Default Steam coming into the car through the air vents!?

Driving to work this morning the temperature gauge was rising up slowly. As I sat in the usual A13 traffic the front window suddenly steamed up, turned on the air con but nothing happened. The temperature gauge was sitting just below the red line, as I started moving again the car filled up with steam through all the vents. Managed to crawl to some family and now on the train. Any thoughts where to start looking when I finally get back to the car?

Would it be safe to drive home from where it is (15miles ish).
Any way of checking/bleeding/refilling for a short term fix?

If the temp gauge is rising does that not sound more like a head gasket issue?

Agreed sounds like heater matrix.

Top it up with water and take spare with you. Drive it home off boost to keep temps down, keep an eye on temp guage if it gets to red pull over, let it cool, top it up and carry on your journey repeat if necassary. You must let it cool and don't whatever you do open the rad cap on a hot engine.

The heater matrix is a bitch of a job. Almost all of the interior out, centre console, dash and carpet pulled back. The heater blower has to come out as the matrix is encased in that. It's DIY if you're handy with a spanner but if you take it to a garage the labour will be expensive as its quite time consuming.

As a temporary repair you could join the heater pipes which go through the bulkhead together, but you won't have any heat through your blowers.

^^ which in all honesty is what i would be doing! Probably the safest way to get car home as if u loose all your water you dont want to be topping it up with cold water and will take along time for the motor to cool down with no water in the system and may also cause further damage if it gets too hot on route

Got it home safely after topping it up. Noticed the passenger side footwell has some water dripping into it, so confirms the heater matrix. Thanks everyone, now just got to think about what to do. Don't think I will attempt removing the dash on my own, don't fancy paying a garage either. Might just bypass the matrix for a while! Just got to work out what pipes I need to connect together!

There are 2 water pipes that run in to the bulk head somewhere around the gear box i beleive, im pretty sure they are the only 2 running in to the car so should be easy enough to source, just remember winter is fast approaching dun wanna be sat in a freezing car with a frozen screen! Not nice
