Default Heat Wrap

Is it essential to heat wrap a down pipe or just an urban myth?

heated cable basicly, its not mega expensive, about £6 a M and then a termination kit is about £8, 10w per hour roughly usage and will keep up to a 150mm wide pipe fully unfrozen.

can get it thermostaticly controlled or self regulating

Is that strictly necessary for my exhaust?

basically due to stainless losing its heat quicker then steel and the fact that exhaust gases cooling down stows the gases down (exactly what you dont want) you should wrap the manifold, and downpipe, also keep your turbo heat sheild or put a blanket on, this will help with throttle response and spool.

If anyone is after some wrap I have a roll somewhere. Can't remember if it was five or ten metres tho. One roll did the RS downpipe.

Chris,

In short,

Wrapping is not essential at all.

However, wrapping serves two main purposes. Firstly keeping as much heat as possible inside your exhaust system where it belongs. Hot gases move faster than cool ones and this helps your exhaust system work more efficiently. This is more noticeable wrapping a manifold and uppipe as its pre turbo and aids in spooling the blower. Almost completely unnoticable but every little helps as they say.

Second, and more importantly IMO. It cuts down a huge amount of radiated heat coming off the downpipe. When you consider that our cars run top mounted intercoolers, we want as little heat left in that engine bay as possible. Moreso, the downpipe runs right next to the brakelines/fluid, servo clutch/fluid, gearbox wiring harness, inner CV and steering UJ. All of these things will be much happier if theyre not subjected to a very hot exhaust pipe.

DEI is the best gear to buy and make sure you stainless wire lock it all the way. All wrap goes brittle and will flake off over time. However DEI in my experience is the most hardy and if fitted properly will last a good while.

100% worth doing IMO.

You also have the option of ceramic coating, however this is more expensive. Your call buddy, bell me if you wanna know more.

Thanks Frayz, spool up isn't so much of an issue for me but I can see that getting heat out of the engine bay is a good thing.

Just out of interest, why don't we wrap the entire length of the exhaust?

Mainly.. cost.

WRC cars ceramic coat the entire exhaust system. You could easily wrap the entire exhaust but you would be transfering so much heat down the pipe you would more than likely melt your exhaust hangers and possibly your rear bumper if you have a close fitting rear box. My Simpsons system i asked to be made as close to the bumper as possible and i managed to melt it before i put some thermo shielding under there. Lol

For the cost of wrapping just the downpipe the benefits far outweigh the cost IMO Chris.

Single most effective way to achieve point two is a turbo blanket

I can touch the heat shield in my cars without losing skin

Super cool.
