giving up smoking....
i know it's non scoob related but hey ho
this question is really for those that have been there and done it.
I am in the process of giving up smoking, patches seem to help.
when at work not to bad, if i want a cig just find something to do, however i find if i'm stuck in traffic or just bored at home the urge to have a cigi is over whelming.
so question is what have you done to stop lighting up in similar sitiuations?
cheers

I tried nicorette gum in these situations mate, they taste like you're chomping on an ashtray and make me feel rough, not worth the money IMO.
Was giving up over christmas and done pretty well on Christmas day, then on boxing day, had a bust up with the inlaws and thought "sod it, I want a cig and started again.

Go Spally!!
Hardest thing I have done - but worth it! Went from 40+ a day to nothing. Just decided enough was enough & stopped dead. Didn't see the point in cutting down bit by bit.
My only drawback - I did turn to food instead (not that it shows!! ) but it is far better than smoking - I have a sense of smell again!!
Good luck - think about the holiday you could have or some other really nice family treat with the money you save! Treat yourself to a PSP or DS to fill those'boredom' moments!
I really hope you manage to quit! Good Luck!!

cheers guys, Paul i know what you mean about the gum....bloody awlful!!! lol
HS food could be the way forward, as i only really want one when stuck in the car to and from work....will have to get a nice big bag of haribo in with me
Hils, started 2 weeks ago, not going to bad, have had a couple of bad days but am still no where near the 20+ a day i used to be on.
Doing it for Bobby along with my health, he is now starting to get a bit energetic so want to be able to play footy etc with him over the park.
1 thing i have decided to do is grow a beard until i have given up....hopefully looking a right muppet will help along the way!! lol

Right behind ya mate.
I guess im lucky being one of those people that can start and stop whenever they like.
Id deffo say just normal chewing gum for the traffic situations. Not for the taste or nicotine but it does give your body something to do. And unlike eating, it doesnt make you fat.

Go for it Paul
I tried to stop several times, but to be honest it was always half heartedly.
When I finally stopped, like Hils I just stopped, but had a good motivation to do so. Other than will power the only thing I used was sweets, mainly mints, this went on for some time and did result in some weight gain.
You could still smoke in the office and in the Pub back then, so I campaigned for the factory to be made non-smoking, and had to stop going to the pub for a long while. Obviously both are now non smoking anyway so would not need to be out of bounds.
To this day i still get the occasional craving (18 years now!), so whatever route you take it will not be easy, but it is of course definitely worth while.
Good luck mate, stick with it.

I'm right with you Spally, just been downto the newsagents, bought a can of relentless and a newspaper, but didn't buy any ciggies - am more determined to stop now
My reasons for stopping are pretty muc the same - for my daughter and my health. I've got Asthma and have been waking up several times a night because i can't catch my breathe, feel like I'm living on my inhalers at the mo!
Plus I've set myself a target - if I stop smoking in Jan, I'm going to treat the scoob to a remap! and the money saved will buy 12 months road tax!

There are those imitation ciggy's which look like your sucking on a tampon, but some find them useful.through your pharmacy you can join their stop smoking group and there are tablets you can take so if you smoke you throw up which may persuade you,all said it's willpower I couldn't do it,just remember your alway's a smoker just one who chooses not to smoke, best of luck with it and I hope you succeed wish I could give up maybe one day

I uses to smoke cheap as chips cartons of Marlboro 100s procured for me from Woodbridge air base by my American g/friend.
I stopped when I couldn't shake off a racking cough following a bad bought of man flu (the worst sort) which gave me a wake up call. I then put the money away that would have gone on them & ended up with over a grand after a year.
The money saving, the health scare plus a move into a nice new fresh non smoke polluted house were the motivation to stick with it. Don't keep an "emergency" *** in the house as it's more temptation & it will start talking to you when you are stressed.
Polos helped me fill the gap & I still keep a few in the car. Watch your weight as with enhanced taste your appetite will improve as well. Good luck & stick with it. You will be so glad you did.

If you want to give up, you'll give up, end of.
If you think you want to give up, but in the back of your mind you don't, whats the point in kidding yourself? You just look like a **** with no willpower when you tell everyone you've started smoking again!
Seems harsh, but its true!!

I have to say, you've been doing really well, especially compared to previous half hearted attempts. I'm really proud of how far you've come in two weeks and I know Bobby will appreciate it as he grows up xxx

Just think when you are out playing with Bobby & he knock's the ball around you & you are unable to give chase as you are wheezing & coughing & need another *** !!
Not good buddy , not good , for Sarah's sake , bobby's sake , but most importantly YOUR SAKE , Stick with your promise

well my beard is getting longer!!!!
really weird the times i thought i would find it hard, at work etc i have found it easy not to smoke.
it's just when i'm stuck in a traffic jam going to and from work, just to easy to stop and have a quick puff.
that said i have had days over the xmas period when i have not had any. I'm not the sort of person who can not stop just like that by the looks of it, so at the mo am happy to be down from 20+ a day to 3 or 4.
Next goal is to be down to 0 by the end of the month.
