Bit of advice required.... Re: Marine Fish and aquarians
Today, we found ourselves looking at Seahorses in Pets at home (not that I would purchase them there) and have found a place at home where we could put a tank.
Does anyone have a marine tank or know much about them and what is involved ?
Have been thinking for a while that I fancy an aquarium, and today has more or less decided the fact.
TIA
EDIT TO ADD ..... Yes, there is a typo in the title , but too late, I cannot alter it

Hi Nate,
Yes i have a marine tank...
Have had this one running around 6 months now and had one around 10 years ago too....
I can offer lots of advice and help, but TBH it's difficult to put that all down on here.
Your welcome to come round and see ours, I'll discuss, reef and fish aquariums and the differences... also what that means in £'s!!!!
Just FYI i have bought most of my stuff from pets at home. they are actually quite knowledgeable (well a couple of them).
This is a quick mobile pick of the tank...

I was looking into getting a marine tank a while ago and it's quite involved but a great hobby!
One piece of advice I was given was that the bigger the tank, the easier it is to keep the water in check for salinity etc, also sea horses are hard to keep as the water has got to be spot on. Mind you the advice may be exagerated but it came from Swallows in Rayleigh.
Sounds like Mike is the guy for advice

I have kept tropical fish most of my life but not marine. But i can say that marine fish, although they are beautiful, are generally harder to keep and a lot more expensive than tropicals. As already said, buy the biggest tank you can afford as this will help keep your water stable.
IMO Swallow Aquatics at Rayleigh are by far the best in the Essex area

My tank is 130 litres, also referred to as a Nano reef...
My previous marine tanks was probably 7 times this size...
That said, technology has moved ion loads now and this tank has been VERY stable from the setup.
I have red up on it and taken some advice from certain forums and have been very successful. 10% is changed weekly, but this is pre-mixed salted RO water (from pets at home).
As long as you take it slow and understand what species are compatible then a Nano can be very successful.
But if you want to go all out then certainly a larger tank is required, but the costs increase significantly.
As to local stores....
Pets at home are better than you might think
Swallows is very good (probably the best technical source), but I've been disappointed with their stock recently
Wickford aquatics i wouldn't touch with a barge pole
Like wise there is another down southchurch road, which again i wouldn't use.
Of course this is IMHO only...

Well.....
I've gone and done it
Bought myself a 180Litre Fluval Vicenza ... like this
Got lots of essentials with the tank, external filter, heater etc
Bought the skimmer, electronic temp. guage and a turbo pump for water circulation ............ And around 20kg of live rock.
Just have to wait for the levels to settle themselves now ......... And swot up some more whilst waiting.
Must say, it is fascinating just watching what critters are coming out of the rock, we have anenomes, slugs, snails, crabs ..... and that is just from teh rock

What have you decided to go for in type of tank (i.e. fish only, reef)?
Be careful what critters you end up... some are not so desirable.
What lights are you running?
Well come to the hobby buddy!!!!
