Why stop at 300 if youre gonna change the turbo anyway?

I suppose.
Don't really want any gearbox issues, and 300 will be enough, for a while.

Go with an 18g, still awesome spool like a 16g but wont run out of puff when you want to go a bit more.

Get it conservatively mapped until youre used to the power... by the general rule of thumb the power threshold lasts about 3 weeks before you want more

So is the g part the weight of the compressor or something?
Is an 18g rare, as I've only really seen 16's or 20's for sale?

No not rare mate, it realates to the gram flow of the compressor wheel as far as i know.

The 16g, good for 340/350bhp, 18g 350/360bhp and 20g for 360/380bhp.

You will read some stupid claims on here that people are making 400 on a 20g but this is highly unlikely. Theyre all based on the same turbocharger so a 16 can be upgraded to an 18 if you wish.

Or you also have the VF30 or 35 which came as standard on the newage stis, these will take you to 340ish bhp and offer good response.

Like i said mate, have a good think about where you want to go with the car as its nice to only have to change the turbo the once.

one thing to remember is an 18g will definatley kill a standard classic gearbox...you stand a much greater chance of getting away with it with a 16g a VF30\35 will probably be even safer. Its gonna cost you close to a grand for the upgrade to a classic sti box and double that for a 6 speed or PPG.

So a 16g is my best bet then?
I'd be happy with the power figures Frayz quoted for that.
Whats the difference between the TDo5 models and the VF series then?

I'd say even the 16g TD05 may be too much as they can make a good 350\350. I don't know a great deal about the VF range, sorry.

Have a search in the technical for more details, iirc NS04 still has a standard UK box and he is running around 330\330. He has written some detailed posts you will find useful

431hp/384lbsft

I guess its to do with your supporting mods.

If your wanting a good torquey 300hp, go for the AFP04, its seen 325hp with more torque in the past with correct supporting mods of corse.

On race gas Nick?

Im sorry but theres no way in the world a 20g will make those sort of numbers without gas or some serious funny fuel. Even thin i think its optimistic.

Whos rollers were they on?

Them figures are developed on a lesser funny fuel than you run Frayz ,

V-power/Methanol/NF mixture.

Results were taken from a number of delta dash runs in both directions using an average of what was not a lot of difference.

I've yet to put it on a set of rollers to campare DD figures to rolling road figures but I'm guessing they will be different, they always are, even between different rolling roads.

It would be bad to say how to get a true power figure but she definately holds her own and proves to be a 400hp+ motor.

Ah okay, I'll reserve judgement till then.

Most tuners add between 23 and 25%. I always go with the lowest figure, that way it can always mbe more on a set of rollers.

I was adding this to my car with the following mods

td05 18g
front mount
full 3 inch system
650 inj
cold air induction
headers
fpr
iridiam spark plugs

and Andy F sid i would make 400 bhp( 420 with meth ) with his remap

only thing is my engine and gearbox wont take it so i decided to return to standard and buy a new sti

Figures i gave were the same quoted to me by Andy F

Just like a td04 is only good for 280bhp but again Andy F made 330bhp from one lol

lol, not too bothered what the pub talk figures are tbh, I know my wagon feels pretty quick with an 18g and as the old guidelines on Andy Forrest's site used to be 380\380 for his 18g, I'm happy
