Gearbox Question
Hello, as some of you ar awear i recently had my Gearbox go crunch/bang/& just made terrable noises.
After ringing around & talking to a few people about the best place to go,
i ended up going to a KNOW COMPANY (name i wont say, at this moment)
They had the car over nite,
FITTING
= Recon Gearbox (with warrantee)
= New Clucth
= New Flywheel
Costing me just under 1 months wages....
Car (gearbox) seemed fine on the way home as was driving with caution.
After a few day i noticed that from 1st to 2nd gear it crunched. spoke to a mate & he said ring the company...
So i did & this is the conversation i had.
Me = hello mate got problem with my gears
Him = Hello whats the problem
Me = it crunches from 1st to 2nd gear
Him = Arh yes thats a common fault with classic gearboxes,
Me = It wasnt doing it in my old box & that was broken
Him = try easing off the power before changing gear
Me = If i slow any more i wont get out of 1st gear
Him = Its probably that you have have Rubbish oil in your box, what you got in there,
Me = What ever you put in when you fitted it.
Him = try putting better synthetic oil in, as they will cure it.
Me = will it??
Him = i know you have a problem & we wont forget you.
That was the whole conversation we had.
Now what i want to know.
Should this be happening (crunching in to 2nd gear ONLY) never did it with my old box EVER (not even when on its way out)
Should i put better oil in OR should they have had done it?
& is it a common fault with classic gearboxes??
Should i take it back.
Please if you know where i went, DONT SAY on open thread....

sounds like synhromesh to me too baz. shouldn't be doing it.
i have found that classics tend to be a bit tight going from second to first unless you're almost stopped but shouldn;t be doing it the other way.
to give you an idea if it's the syncro, push the clutch down to take it out of gear, while in neutral come up off the clutch, then push it down again and engage gear. you'll have to do it pretty quick and there is a bit of a nack to it but if it stops crunching when you do this it's a fair sign of synco being worn.
the other thing it could be is that the selector forks are bent or not aligned properly.
i'd go back to the company and tell them to sort it out. after all it has a warentee and should be right.

Without a question of a doubt there is something not right, what it is is irrelevant, get it back there and demand it sorted.
Common problem on classic gearboxs -
I wonder what company it was

Dont worry PHIL im not intending to NAME & SHAME like everyones wants me to,
i was after a second opinion,
For my own personal satifaction, that the SUPPLIER was telling the truth...
& it seems that from what people have said on BOTH THREADS, that its the SYNCRO'S not OIL..
so i hope to be getting it sortted.
Before i go to FRANCE in JULY.

Yep all sounds like the synchro to me too. I don't think its very expensive to get the bits, its the labour to strip and rebuild etc.

Baz - why are YOU changing the oil?
As you have just paid to have the gearbox changed, if there is a fault, surely you simply take it back to whoever did the work and get them to rectify the problem under warrantee! Simple.
I’m no expert in the legalities of these things, but I’m sure there is someone on here that is and would be willing to advice you only the correct way to proceed.
I may be wrong, but now that you have done something to it, in my mind you have blurred the responsibility for the problem?

A good point, however the "garage" did recommend Baz to change the oil

I wouldn't touch it myself, I would have got them to do it, that's what Baz paid them for surely, to FIX the gearbox. In my opinion that would include re-doing the oil if it wasn't done correctly in the first place.

as the claim has been made the date is not an issue now. make sure you have something to prove this tho baz. BUT i personally would be on the phone every oppotunity/daily until something is sorted.

Baz
The Company is happy to do the work when ever you can get the car to them as he confirmed in his email to me
Just phone him and arrange a date
You have no problem re the warrantee as you have advised him in good time

As for oil - we had our gearbox recently replaced and the garage we used put the oil in for us, as I may be wrong here - but when you fill the gearbox with oil it has to be done from underneath the car - so not something you can easily do yourself unless you have ramps!
Hope you get it sorted
