Slipping Belt

Slipping Belt
I Think the belt that drives the air conditioning compressor on MY2003 STi is slipping, i get a really loud squeeling noise when i start the car up, which dissapears when i gently rev the engine. It also happened on the way home last night, but knocking the car out of gear then again gently reving the engine made it stop.
Is it ok to take the belt off and see if the noise is present without it in place .
Also is replacing it as simple as just reataching a new one or does the tensioner have to be slackened off to get it over the pulleys

Might just be worth checking the tension, belts stretch, so just tighten it a little and see if it stops

It could be either the alternator/power steering belt or the air con belt. They both have adjusters & if you fit new belts they will need slackening off just enough to get the belts over the pulleys & snug in the grooves. Then adjusting back up to the right tension.
It's a simple 5 minute job to adjust both belts using just basic spanners/sockets. And only takes a bit longer if you want to change the belts.
These pictures are from when I fitted my light weight pulleys but they show both tensioners & the two belts and the adjusters.
Remove this cover then it's all easy to get to.
Front belt is Power steering/alternator & rear one is air con both feed off crank pulley bottom right.
Crank pulley in centre (ignore the 22mm socket bit) The Air con belt adjuster is to the right of it & the air con clutch pulley is in top right corner.
This shows how to alter the alternator belt tension. (ignore the rest bar on ledge bit)

Pretty sure it's the Air con belt as it seems a lot looser than the other belt.
Bit of a numpty question but looking at the third picture down, i know which bit is the adjuster i just don't know which bolts to loosen off or even tighten to re tension the belt, the top two bolts seem to attach to the block so it's gotta be either the bottom bolt or summin to do with the threaded nut running to the left hand side
I await instruction

Loosen the botton bolt that the pulley in on, otherwise when you turn the tensioner bolt it'll snap the plastic adjuster at the bottom that the pulley is seated on...
Been there, done that

If it's the PowerSteering belt then just use the bottom picture.
Only undo the two 12mm bolts on the alternator mounts just enough to let it move as you wind the adjuster bolt round. Otherwise it goes all floppy & when you tighten them later it will alter the ammount of tension that you thought you had.
Once it's all tightened up recheck that the tension is still how you want it.
It wouldn't hurt to pull the belt right off & check it for wear/scorching/shiny patches etc on it's inside edge. Depending how much squealing it's been doing it may be a bit stressed.
Bit like how the belt gets in a hoover when the brush gets jammed & stops turning & the motor isn't switched off straight away.

It's thinner & has a longer run between pulleys than the other one. So can appear to be looser.

If you want a hand I am about this weekend or next week as i'm on holiday. Apart from Monday morning when i'm at Xtreme for a cam belt service.
