Question any help on my car

ive noticed that my car has been running very rich and it is drinking the petrol very fast,i can smell it out the back, and the cars popping quite alot which i dont mind but its the car running rich is what i dont like, any ideas on how to stop this,i was woundering if a remap would sort it to get it running right, and have it on the roling road, but can you remap a standered sti ecu,i had a thought that it wasnt possible and that i would have to up grade the ecu,can anyone confirm any of what ive said in this link, cheers people.

what year is the engine you put in and did you use the ecu that came with it? Also what boost are you running? looks at it this way, you're not going to blow your engine up through detting at the moment but running too rich can be just as bad as you'll get bore wash. are you running an atmospheric dump valve? these can cause running rich.

im not sure what year the engine is it came with 45000 miles on the engine that i know i will have to have a look at the documents to see if it says anything on the year, also dont want to sound stupid but whats the difference between the dump valves, aslo its running about 1 bar hope that makes sense

reason i ask which year is it depends if you can get the ecu remapped. i think it's my98 onwards that can be mapped with the ecutek software. best bet is to get it to someone like mocom or xtreme scoobies to get them to check it out. it may not be the ecu and could be something like a faulty lambda sensor or maf sensor.

the standard dump valve on an impreza is a recirculating one so you won't get the whoosh. an atmospheric one is where it releases the excess boost pressure into the air giving the whoosh.

boost sounds right for an sti engine afaik. wrx run at about 0.7 bar. but all this is dependant on what ecu you have or if someone has messed about with the actuator iirc.

Sounds like a Lambda sensor has burnt out, which is now telling the ECU that the engine is running lean, so it allows more fuel through, because the Lambda isn't registering a correct voltage (Stoich) the engine will run very rich.

The offending Lambda will most probably be the one in the exhaust manifold

well the engine is pretty much guessing what fuel to put in if it's not connected. i'm sure cornelius will be along shortly to let you know where to plug it in to.

The lambda in the downpipe is the secondary, it's usually the main lambda in the exhaust manifold on the offside pointing towards the inner wing, (under the ABS unit)

ah yes i know the one ive seen it when it was up on the ramps for the m.o.t i think the wires got alittle burnt cause they were touchin the manifold so i had a look i moved them away and taped them up so there wasnt any bare wire showing could this of caused the sensor to sort out,and also what does the one on the decat do should that be connected cause its looks like someone has cut the wires off of the sensor but i think the conecter on the wire loom is still there
