Default Does anyone have a PPG 5 speed, fitted to their car?

I am very close to ordering a six speed conversion for my car it is going to cost around £2500 inc fitting etc. Now for a little over £3000 I can have my box rebuilt using PPG gearsets.

I was just wondering if anyone had any experience of it, and is it worth the extra money?

Any thoughts guys

Strenghthened (sp) gear sets, can hold huge amount of torque

The pure straight cut ones do whine a bit though so im told

Did you fit 3 standard 5 speeders, the JDM 6 speed which im looking at can hold some good power/abuse

i did yep BUT there is ALWAYS that doubt in my mind (altho depends what you call serious power) that a 6 speed will fail too.... IF (touch wood) anything happened to mine it would be a tough gearset for me first time out...

MAybe not serious power as such, but do plan to achieve in the coming yeasr between 350 - 400 so i reckon the 6 speed may be a good choice, it will always be worth money, if kept in good condition, so if my power expectations increase i can always remove it and sell it.

Im wondering if the 6th gear adds any kind of MPG on a long run

Id go for th PPG 5 speeder mate... just for the whine alone lol.

In all seriousness a PPG 5 speed will be much nicer to use than a 6 speed. Sure the 6 speeds are a good box and will hold onto 500bhp but youre forever changing gear, this will lose you time on the track and on the strip and becomes annoying when driving with intent.

Plus the whine of a straight cut is to die for ha ha.

PM a guy called BOB5, he runs a PPG 5 peed in his classic of which he drags, also a lot of the serious boys run em.
I think 911 runs one in his sprint car... these are the people you need to talk to.

So would you agree mate that the PPG route is better than a 6 speeder?

I've had a PPG for nearly a year. It's been fine for me so far.
It's stopped me from worrying whether the box is going to break or not if that helps.

At your projected power level though, i'd be inclined to consider the 6 speed, but that's only because that box should be unfazed (sp?) with that.

I think this thread is swaying me more and more toward keeping the 5 speed.

The terminal speed is slightly higher on the 6 speed though, or can you specify a higher 5th gear when ordering gears?
