How often do you run a virus check!

Anti Virus programs are essential for your computer.

There are many type of programs out there which are good and CRAP.

Many a time i go out and see customers who have no Anti Virus program, but either have a firewall or 2. Having a Firewall does not stop viruses infecting your computer.

Plz dont debate on here which Anti Virus program you have and whcih is the best. The so called best ones out there are actually damaging your computer.

plz note: We are in no way slagging of any anti virus company at all, through 10 years of being a PC Technician, and most of our work is Onsite, we get to know what is the best program and what isnt.

Although *Norton and *Mcafee are very good Anti Virus programs, im sorry to say but they come bottom of our list. This is only due to problems and compatability issues with operating systems and programs. *(resources and memory hungry).

If you are running Norton or Mcafee and have no problems then great, stick with it.

Avg used to be on the top of my list until i realised it does not see all known threats. many times had we gone out and had to use another Anti virus program to remove/heal/quarintine multiple viruses.

Avg free edition is good as a Free Edition, you may want to go to panda anti virus website and get them to do a full system scan free of charge.

i use AVG free edition, updates everyday and runs in the b/g very well
also run spy bot and ad-aware

Especially SAV version 10 (Symantec Anti Virus - which is the same software/company as Norton) , this has caused many problems with using too much memory and slowing everything down, i work for a company which resells AV & security Software and i am going on the amount of problems and issues which have arisen since our customers have upgraded.

I have Norton Internet Security 2005

I am due to upgrade at the end of this month, is it worth me upgrading or should I go with one of the products at the top of this page

As since installing the p.c has run slower and have had numerous comptability problems to do with the firewall and most of the time have to have it disabled to allow programs to work properly.

I would, i installed Mcafee when i still had Norton insatalled...pc not happy, froze, had rebuild it(re-install o/s)

Ok, Totaly uninstall everything to do with Norton. even as far as going into your harddrive c:\ programfiles\norton and deleting the folder.

install panda anti virus titanium 2006, plz note that all update Anti virus programs do use more memory and resources. if you have a pc that lacks memory and resources do not install programs like norton/mcafee/panda etc as the are all memory hungry and you may need to add more ram.

Any problems give me a shout.

You really need to look at how the virus scanner works and what it scans for. There are virus, worms, trojan horses and some crazy stuff that can actually bypass virus walls like spyware which can create more harm than good.
e.g does it scan new programs, scripting when it is executed, web pages, email and on and on and on....


So dont just think of it as a virus scanner, that is why Norton Internet Security is by far the better package for the whole picture.

If i was just going to go for a proper virus only package AVG is one of the leading business packages.

The reason for the Norton and AVG is there support and combat for virus updates is better than the others in my experience

^^^ I aint here to argue with anyone but as the thread states we are not here to say what is best and what isnt, like i said 10 years of ONSITE experience and owning a computer shop says otherwise.
