Anti virus Program

How often do you run a virus check!

Anti Virus programs are essential for your computer.

There are many type of programs out there which are good and CRAP.

Many a time i go out and see customers who have no Anti Virus program, but either have a firewall or 2. Having a Firewall does not stop viruses infecting your computer.

Plz dont debate on here which Anti Virus program you have and whcih is the best. The so called best ones out there are actually damaging your computer.

Antivirus software is must-have protection.

This review picks the best antivirus software based on its virus detection abilities, features, and breadth of protection. Whether you're seeking total system coverage or an ala carte solution, each of the following products provides superb virus protection for Windows-based PCs. Because every system is unique, evaluate several of these antivirus products to find the software best suited for your PC and your level of experience.

.................................................. ................................................

1) Platinum Internet Security 2005/06

Panda Software's Platinum Internet Security 2005 combines antivirus, firewall, and spam filtering along with its new TruPrevent Technology. Both AV-Test.org and ICSA Labs have tested the TruPrevent claims of behavioral, non-signature detection of new malware. And both have found the claims to be true. (TruPrevent Technology can also be purchased separately as an add-on to other antivirus protection).

2) PC-cillin Internet Security 2005

Building on its solid antivirus capabilities, PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 includes spam and spyware protection, wireless device protection, firewall, privacy data protection, parental controls, and a year's free tech support via a toll-free number. The software automatically checks for new virus updates every 3 hours and the spam prevention includes a whitelist, blacklist, and Bayesian filter - all at a price substantially lower than many other antivirus suites.

3) BitDefender Professional Edition

Softwin's BitDefender Professional protects against viruses, spyware, and instant messaging threats, as well as offering firewall rules to block undesirable traffic and a privacy gateway to keep your identity and preferences private while surfing the Internet.

4) Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal

Kaspersky offers excellent antivirus protection, perhaps unsurpassed in its ability to recognize various compression algorithms and accurately detect infected files contained within the archives. However, their interface is rather convoluted and may be best suited to more advanced users. Should be used in conjunction with a firewall.

Some of you may be shocked at not listing your antivirus, plz dont be.

just through years of experience i have found the above anti virus programs worth there wait in gold, and do what there supposed to do.

plz note: We are in no way slagging of any anti virus company at all, through 10 years of being a PC Technician, and most of our work is Onsite, we get to know what is the best program and what isnt.

Although *Norton and *Mcafee are very good Anti Virus programs, im sorry to say but they come bottom of our list. This is only due to problems and compatability issues with operating systems and programs. *(resources and memory hungry).

If you are running Norton or Mcafee and have no problems then great, stick with it. :)

Milamber 18 October 2005 05:33 PM

Avg scheduled to update once per day and run a full test on both hard drives daily.

baz69birds 18 October 2005 06:39 PM

up date mine/ours every week with out fail.

&/or when ever we get a risk come up, i always run the program just to make sure.

Avg used to be on the top of my list until i realised it does not see all known threats. many times had we gone out and had to use another Anti virus program to remove/heal/quarintine multiple viruses.

Avg free edition is good as a Free Edition, you may want to go to panda anti virus website and get them to do a full system scan free of charge.

Phil 19 October 2005 09:19 AM

If I wanted to instal Panda should I remove Norton?

rb5 286 19 October 2005 10:10 AM

i use AVG free edition, updates everyday and runs in the b/g very well
also run spy bot and ad-aware

Especially SAV version 10 (Symantec Anti Virus - which is the same software/company as Norton) , this has caused many problems with using too much memory and slowing everything down, i work for a company which resells AV & security Software and i am going on the amount of problems and issues which have arisen since our customers have upgraded.

Mrs Baz 19 October 2005 02:03 PM

I have Norton Internet Security 2005

I am due to upgrade at the end of this month, is it worth me upgrading or should I go with one of the products at the top of this page http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_12_6.gif

As since installing the p.c has run slower and have had numerous comptability problems to do with the firewall and most of the time have to have it disabled to allow programs to work properly.

Ok, Totaly uninstall everything to do with Norton. even as far as going into your harddrive c:\ programfiles\norton and deleting the folder.

install panda anti virus titanium 2006, plz note that all update Anti virus programs do use more memory and resources. if you have a pc that lacks memory and resources do not install programs like norton/mcafee/panda etc as the are all memory hungry and you may need to add more ram.

Any problems give me a shout.

ok she is banned from driving the scooby hehehehehehe. not.

Lewi has your store got panda anti virus 2006 titanium in?

Little H 20 October 2005 08:02 AM

You really need to look at how the virus scanner works and what it scans for. There are virus, worms, trojan horses and some crazy stuff that can actually bypass virus walls like spyware which can create more harm than good.
e.g does it scan new programs, scripting when it is executed, web pages, email and on and on and on....

So dont just think of it as a virus scanner, that is why Norton Internet Security is by far the better package for the whole picture.

If i was just going to go for a proper virus only package AVG is one of the leading business packages.

The reason for the Norton and AVG is there support and combat for virus updates is better than the others in my experience

John1uk 20 October 2005 08:45 AM

^^^ :nono: I aint here to argue with anyone but as the thread states we are not here to say what is best and what isnt, like i said 10 years of ONSITE experience and owning a computer shop says otherwise.
