Default decatting an exhaust question

just wondering why a remap is a must on a vehicle if it gets a decat system?iv read many posts on the impreza that it will damage the engine if its not remapped after a decat fitted? where is the evidence of this?iv had many cars in the past and put a decat on nearly all of them never had any problems and engine always went as it should.appreciate the inputs from members.cheers friends.

i think its alot to do with age of the car. i was told going decat on my 2.5 i would need a remap. i was told that by my mapper and i really dont have a reason to question his knowledge.

i think people say its safer to have it mapped, not essential. also the mapper can adjust afr etc to maximise the gain from the free flowing exhaust. at the end of the day its your engine. my wagon is mapped and im going for full decat with ported headers and up pipe after my mot and i will def have the map tweeked to suit.

as Yabbadoo says, for the cost of modifying a map is it worth a £3k rebuild cost. I always go safe rather than sorry. i think the timing can be advanced quite a bit due to increased flow
