Default td04

Hey yo, I'm not good with this side of things but is there anything that can be done to the td04 turbo on the wrx to get over 300bhp? Like bigger compressor or something? Or is the simple answer buy a td05

you wont see over 300 on a td04. a hybrid one will hit 300 with pretty much the same spool as the origional td04. td05 will do over 300 with a remap and supporting mods.

Ah I see, ive managed to get mine to 270bhp, my tuner said if I get a hold of a td05, vf34, pink injectors he can tune to 330ish safely. I was just seeing if there was away to keep the td04 then risking a second hand turbo, thanks for the info guys 👍

A TD05 will need to be modified to front entry to be a replacement for the TD04 unless you can pick one up already converted.

"280 max mate with a few mods and remap "

Just got 291bhp off mine last week, thanks to Mr Bob Rawle of Swindon fame.
Originally had prodrive perf kit but remapped with Ecutek using Bob's customised map and a couple of small physical tweaks.
Doubt you'd get much more than that with a TD04 though.

Thought I read someone had managed 311bhp with a TD04 but may have been dreaming!

Tweaks:
- Car originally had PPP so PPP exhaust and bits
- Bob replaced some tube (turbo vacuum type) with a restrictor in it with an open, unrestricted tube instead
- Remap

That's it. Sorry, not very technical else I'd give you the exact names of the bits!

That's a really good outcome, you must have a healthy scoob 👍 think I'm going to go bigger turbo after Christmas, try source a sti turbo. Mines at 270bhp at the minute, still loads of fun but always craving more lol

yeah, feeling exactly the same urge myself, for exactly the same turbo.
Want to get to about 325bhp/similar torque and that'll do me.
Don't want to out power my skills!

Someone on fb rebuilds them with a bigger internal so would think that would make over 300

I have a WRX 300 with PPP and looked into this on the net for a long while
the best result I saw with a TD04 was mapped almost 300/300, but with the torque coming in really low, subsequently I went for a TD05 but although I am running 1.5 bar on it , and this makes the WRX a much faster car. I kind of miss the point and squirt character the TD04 gave in the sub 3000 rpm. You can have a lot of fun on a damp B road on a TD04 just squeezing the throttle as you pass through each bend until the edge of traction. That just does not happen on the TD05. The power when it comes, arrives later in great dollops and you tend to become more of a passenger than the driver. In the dry its exciting but in the wet this type of power delivery is tricky, you will see Fiestas can beat you of the lights and around town , if you do a lot of town driving big turbos is not ideal. You can tweak the ECU around some of that loss of drivability but anyhow you will find the WRX brakes and suspension are not up 300 bhp , In my view even the PPP version is boarder line. At this point you should have bought a Sti. My advice is to anyone with a WRX TD04 go map it with some 550cc injectors add a PPP or good cat back take the uppipe out you are not restricted by the intake it flows plenty well enough for upto 300 bhp most will not see more than 290 bhp, get some decent pads in the brakes then go enjoy driving it. If you still have cash over and feel you really need more power sell it and buy an Sti , it will tune further , handle better and the brakes can stop you.

Engine Tuner do a billet TD04, they're designed to make 320bhp but with quicker spool than the VF turbo's.

OMG ,

Throw the Uppipe Cat out unless you want to pick bits of your turbo out of the sump later.

Even without re-mapping for it , (which anyone will advise is better as it will help spool up and flow for power) its still got to be safer for your engine. I am shocked that RaceDynamix did the map without telling you, the downpipe cat does a decent enough job on its own to pass the MOT , mine even passed the TÜV .

Too many variables across rolling roads, ambient conditions, fuel, transmission loss calcs etc to get too hung with a few % difference in Flywheel figures.
