Hi, had this problem on MY03 WRX shifting between 3rd and 4th, it was the "syncro's" between the gearing, lucky for me it was under warrenty, subaru said it would have been around the £1800 for new syncro's and the labour. .. ouch!!

I thought i was lucky as it happend to me while i had warranty, but 10k later the 6th gear is now crunching. Should of had a new gearbox as it is a fault and not just new syncro's. My main dealer agreed, to late now though

Should only be looking at a £500 rebuild though

Theres a similar post in the general section.

I found doubling the clutch stopped the crunching when driving at high speed.

I also have an 03 STI - and have had crunch in the 4th to 5th change when moving through the gears quickly. If you deliberately pause in the neutral gate, just briefly then it does not do it.

However, 6 months ago I had the Subaru quick shift kit fitted - and have not hade the 4th to 5th crunch since - not that I have noticed.

It might be worth trying this before shelling out on gearbox work.

Red man, I've had the quick shift fitted and its still done it - other thing I'm going to try is changing the oil to semi Castrol which is ment to help the syncros loads...so its just a matter of time before she'll crunch again I'm afraid.

I'll try that pause on shifts but it will mess up acceleration a bit.
