Default 2nd gear woes-6 speed.....

as you know i have just had a 6 speed conversion in my blob wrx,the box came from a 2002 prodrive bugeye sti standard car with 80k on it.

i know the clutch is good as its an 8 month old exedy pink box clutch from my old 5 speed.

the box was filled with new gear oil when fitted (motul gear 300 i think).

its like i have to double clutch it to select second-worse coming from 3rd to 2nd.

im guessing scynro's-anybody know a rough price to drive in/out for them to be replaced?

I got a price from john pye Motorsport in bishop Auckland to have the synchros in my 6 speed replaced think it was just over £600 and that was with me taking my box out and taking it down to his place, I'm looking into this again this week, I'll let you know how I get on.

Api in Harbury. It's a common fault. Mine crunches at high revs into 5th. Speak to David there for a price to do it....

why have you got the old 5 speed clutch in?? the 6 speed one is bigger as is the flywheel.
older sti boxes have weaker synchros in the newer ones are far stronger.

Ive not decided on which clutch to use for when my engines built so I stuck with the 5 speed as it's still quite new.

mate its a money pit, problem after problem, id seriously get rid and just buy yourself an sti with decent history.

you may end up with a great car but it will cost you ten times what starting with a decent car would have cost and be worth 1/4 of its cost

i understand projects but at some point it becomes financial suicide.

We can fix that for sure. But it is unlikely to be as cheap as you'd hope. If the crunching is bad then it'll need a gear and a hub and a synchro ring. Usually the ones that get replaced with the carbon coated are 4th, 5th & 6th So those will get replaced as a matter of up grade That will be £126.00 + VAT [ £151.20 inc ] The labour for strip and rebuild a 6 speeder is £360.00 + VAT [ £432.00 inc ]

Then we get to the 2nd gear problem. As a good guess the gear is going to cost £140.00 ish [ £168.00 inc ] A hub will be a similar price [ £168.00 inc ] The the synchro ring on 2nd is one of the 3 piece versions which doubles the area of grip and is unusual to fail. They are about £125.00 + VAT [ £150.00 inc ]

Those are known likely costs and none of it is certain until the box is in bits. Except to say that if there is lots of wear on the 2nd gear set up and all 3 parts need changing it will be false economy to not replace them all at the same time. As the damaged parts will not improve by mixing some new and some old. The old parts will knacker the new parts far quicker than you can imagine.

There are no gaskets on a 6 speeder but a set of oil seals is about another 65 -75 quid + VAT [ £90.00 inc vat worst case ]

Difficult to see a bill coming in at less than £1100.00 or so inc VAT if you bring the box out of the car. If we remove and install too, that will add about another £360.00 + VAT [ £432.00 inc ] plus oil.

Call fir a chat if I can help. David 01926 614333
