Cambelt change how-to?

I am a little concerned the cambelt hasn't been changed for some time on the Legacy I picked up. I found a reference to a SOHC engine, but it seems way OTT, taking off all the idlers etc.
So what is basic sequence of events? Surely it can't be that bad,
Remove alternator/ac drive belts
Remove front pulley
Remove covers
Rotate engine to correct alignment
Fix pulley postitions (any easy way on this engine?)
Slacken tensioner
Take off old belt
Put on new belt
Retension belt (but to how much?
Re-assemble in reverse order...
Have I missed anything?
Cheers

the tensoiner is hydaulic you will need to push it in (by using a bench vice or small press)and place a small allen key or simular though it to hold it in ,when in place pull pin and it will self tension , i made two small wooden wedges to lock the camshaft wheels before i took old belt off so nothing moves , you can just about see one of them in the photo.just make sure you take them out before starting .

Thanks, I take it the cam wheels have marks that need to line up with each other rather than somewhere on the cylinder head.
Any clue as the easiest place to stop the engine at?
Cheers

i put it in top 5TH and rocked the car back until marks lined up ,there is marks on cam wheels that line up with each other, and the crankshaft pulley there is a key in it and should be 6 o,clock on the crankshaft when all is lined up.

Sorted, should be much easir than my k-series Rover. Rover really didn't want the belt cover to fall off, nor the crankshaft drive pully nut....
Thanks for the info.

How easy was it to undo the crank pulley bolt ?
Stephen
Yes, I know I asked this in a recent cambelt change topic, but you can never get too many opinions
Plus I'm getting ready to do mine

i made a tool to go in the 4 holes around the nut .but some people put it in 5th and get someone to put their foot on brake and try turn it that way (anticlockwise)but it wouldnt move for me so i made this instead.

K series I did was a bitch, as I didn't have a air gun (can reach nut through arch). In the end used screwdriver on starter ring and long ring spanner, not ideal though.
Good socket and a breaker bar hit with a mallet may help to shock the nut off if the engine is in gear.
Pin spanner would be the best though.
What centers are those holes on btw? I also notice you put some flats on the pins too.

Not yet, engine is still okay. Put it off because I was going to replace heads and so on.
The procedure is now detailed in the PDF workshop manual I got, see Chris Palmer's Website for details.

One way to undo the bolt, is to get a breaker bar, lock it agaisnt the chassis leg, beside the battery and hit the starter. Works on almost any stubborn crank bolt. Just make sure you dont start the engine. Id also recommend removing the radiator, as it gives you a hell of a lot more room to work. The legacy also has a bit more room than an impreza , but not much
You can tighten again by locking something against the flywheel. I also put thread lock on to be sure.
I actually heard of a guy breaking 1st gear in his audi quattro, by trying to undo the crank pulley, by putting it into 1st, and standing on the brake, and having someone try and undo the bolt!!!!!!!!!!
