As title. Do these things actually reduce your charge temperature or not? No I am not buying a FMIC

I never saw any convincing data on it. Anyone supply some data?

No I am not buying a FMIC

Notice: this thread was just added to "favorites" and I'll slap it around yer ears in a years time !

Should have done the same with the "I'm not buying another turbo" threads

Just kidding.

I don't have the answer, but my gut feeling is: splitter or not, the fact that the engine heats up the intercooler resulting in very unpredictable performance is not going to be helped with that splitter. Once moving, the TMIC on the MY99> cars seems to work fine.

Oh, and having seen it in real life, I'm going for the Pace thing BTW. Very nice.

It's interesting to note that the STI 7 has an intercooler splitter as standard. Subaru would'nt fit one if there was no benefit to it.

I Had one on my old MY00 In the winter it seemed to make little difference but in summer it did give a noticable difference in performance.

John

I'll measure it for you!

I've just fitted some thermocouples, before and aft of the i/c so I can record temp differential (with and without splitter).

But hey, I made one for £2 so who cares, as long as it doesn't make it worse....

Thanks Floyd. I managed to get charge of ambient + 30 C today, so every little helps. Preferably the normal Scottish intercooler water spray and water injection which we call weather and then I'll complain it is cold.

John,

Hopefully, this is the answer you've been waiting for. I've got one of those Alloy IC splitters and it seems to reduce charge temps by about 2DegC. Caveat for you though, there is no measureable improvement on reducing the time it takes to remove heak soak and it only seems to make a difference once you are above approx 40mph.

Hope this helps,

Matt

BTW, cost me £5 from Michael Ferries so I didn't care if it worked or not - the fact that it did was just an added bonus really.....

John,

Did you also notice this link with some Test Results?

I contacted Michael ages ago about this myself, but never got around to ordering one. It looked superb and wasn't expensive at all.

Email to Michael from the address on his page fails. I'll try it again, meantime anyone have any contact details? Is he still doing them?

Edit- there is an extra space on his email address on the page between virgin and .net for some reason. Should work now.

Adam,

But something that costs about 50p to make is unlikey to not make on if it is of benefit....the OE pump is presumably made to do it's job on the OE spec car and to a cost.....

John, I'm sure ChrisL was talking about Michael making some new scoops right now....give him a shout if you can't get hold of Michael (or let me know and I will).

I am measuring both ambient and charge temps digitally (at the throttle body for charge). On the open road trying to cruise at 3500rpm the splitter may result in a small reduction, up to 2 deg. cent.

John - can you post back if you get any response ? I've been intrigued with this idea and have looked at a lot of threads on i-club etc and it seems like such an inexpensive easy mod that it has to be worth a try.

I mailed the same person (or tried to) a while back but got no reply so figured it was too long gone to pursue but I'm up for getting one if he's still making em as I have no easy access to machining facilities - if you have I'm sure I have the cutting diagram I could send if all else fails...

cheers

steve

The last time I contacted Michael was on the 31-1-2001. I e-mailed him on michael.ferries4@virgin.net (which is the address on his website).

Hopefully he's still making them.

I've got one of Michael's splitters fitted to my MY99. Cost £25 including P&P. Whether it improves anything I don't know, as I fitted it February, so was cold. Looks good though - especially with the little Devil logo . Straightforward to fit too, and the instructions supplied are easy. Would swap the supplied screws for galvanised ones though - although mine haven't gone rusty yet I'm sure they will - must paint them.

John,

I have ordered, received and fitted the intercooler splitter from Michael (mail to: michael.ferries4@virgin.net) a few weeks ago. It cost £25 and was of good quality. Obviously anyone could make one, but for £25 who cares!

I have no way to measure charge temps so do not have any hard evidence to know if it is helping. With that said, I do not seem to have the initial reduction in power after queuing at a set of traffic lights straight after a 15 min motorway blast on my way in to work. I can only assume that the splitter keeps the IC a little cooler, enough that whilst at the lights the heat soak effect takes longer.

Anyway, that’s just my impression. BTW, I removed my Devil sticker - don't really want to advertise mods if you know what I mean ;-)

Steve.

Guys,

I think the splitter might not make so much of a difference in your colder climate but in Australia I think it might help.

We had our hottest Autumn day since 1905 the other day. 28deg C.

So our summer temps of 30degC+ for days running might have better gains with a splitter

Cheers
Antony

With the Scottish weather as it is we have our own natural water spray 24/7

APS FMIC ordered. It is THREE MONTHS later and I am inflicted with moderately severe mod-itis. And summer and a big turbo have changed my view
