Default Anyone have clue what this noise could be?

So I have had this noise/sound for quite a long while now, but I haven't used the car for the past two months so I haven't bothered with it. But now the car is back on the road and now I'm reminded of it.

2002 JDM WRX with the 5MT box. The sound that I have no idea what it is, is heard when:
- I change gears, both when engaging and disengaging a gear
- When in gear, and moving the gear stick from side to side
- When in fifth gear, I hear it constantly when accelerating - as soon as I take my foot of the gas, it stops. When in any other gear though, it's silent.
- The sound is fainter/lower when the car is cold/when it's cold outside. Louder when the car is warm.

I wouldn't call it grinding, it's not like when a synchro is worn out, it's not that kind of "harsh grinding". I've replaced the oil twice, no difference. There's no problem changing gears or anything, it just makes this noise..

I appreciate any help I can get to figure out what it is!

It seems I have to try to capture this noise on video, since it's not really a "whining" type of sound - more like a light scraping, yet it's not grinding either. So yeah, kind of hard to explain.. Damn it, this is almost making me lose sleep - is it something expensive to fix or just a bearing :/

Alright, so here's a video with the sound:
http://youtu.be/4-LLsav0fZU

As you can see, when IN gear, it only makes the sound when I move the gear stick from side to side. But also when shifting in and out of gear. It's not only in fifth, but I used that as an example.

And I know I have a bad wheel bearing, which you also can hear, but that will be replaced next week.

Hi sqd,

I had a similar issue on my car and it turned out to be nothing more then the solid billet uprated pitch mount on my engine.
It was transferring the noise of the gearbox through the chassis of the car.

Replaced for a GP N abs version and the noise has dissappeared.

HTH

Hah, that almost a little bit funny.. But I don't really think it's that, I mean this came basically from nowhere, I haven't installed anything new under the hood since I got the car. Did you hear the noise when shifting and when moving the stick when in gear?

I appreciate the suggestion though, i'm thankful for any help I can get

I would would say a bearing in the box is on its way out. When you move the gearstick from side to side whilst in gear you are putting extra load on the gearset and in turn putting a different load onto the worn bearing causing the noise. Well thats what i think anyway

I'm thinking its something like that too, if I just knew what bearing it is..
