Default 6 speed issue

Hello I have a 2002 sti...

The issue I have is there is a lot of movement in the gear **** in 3rd and 4th gear when the car is labouring say up a hill the gear **** judders and if I accelerate hard in 3rd and 4th then back off the gear **** moves about half an inch.

Is this a gearbox issue or gear linkage related?

Cheers Ben

Engine or G/B mount would be my bet, I also have an 02 bug and replaced all the mounts recently as the engine movement was huge on the old worn out mounts.

Beware, if this is a road car, competition engine & gearbox mounts vastly improve the feel of the gearshift, but transmit more noise and vibration into the bodyshell.

I was going to stick with Subaru oem parts as it is indeed a road car and I know how harsh updated mounts can be lol

I'm running the Hardrace Mounts form Apex - really good but yes a little more noise, The Grp N are also very good.

Good shout peeps, We fitted the gearbox mount and pitch stopper and there is a lot less movement in the gear **** the 2 engine mounts look fairly new and so we left them alone. A bit more gearbox whine is noticeable but no dramas as the drive feels much more direct.
