One of my senior engine builders wants to retire at the end of the year. I need to replace him.

If you have the skills to be one of the APi team of engine builders or know someone who can fit the bill, I'd like to talk to him.

You will need to be very skilled and familiar with performance engines [ not necessarily Subaru ] and rest assured, any ' chancers ' will get found out very quickly.

We do not expect to have to train such a person, just familiarise them with the APi way of doing things.

Please contact me; David on any of the details above.

Decent pay, decent conditions, friendly atmosphere, Monday to Friday job

Do you have apprentices ? not for me, but in this day and age it may be a option,
Train them right from day one and they will be spot on.
Just a thought

EVERY ' apprentice ' we have ever had has been a disaster from 1984 until now.

Scenario: Mum or Dad rings to ask for a job for their "car mad son" who has been told by his career adviser that he should apply for a job in a garage as he has the aptitude and ability to do well.

So they come for an interview and it goes well the lad is bright, sensible and interested. So we arrange a start date.

On the appointed date the stupid, lazy, unmotivated, " identical twin brother " arrives for work and spends a miserable day not doing what his instructor mechanic asks him to do, or does it wrong.

5 o'clock the mechanic comes to the office and advises that the kid is useless and everything he has done all day has had to be done again and we are now behind with the work. " Move him on 'cos I don't want him."

Next day, different section, same story. And so on.

I say it is an " identical twin ", cos the one that comes for the job interview bears no resemblance to the bright, intelligent lad that came with his mum and dad...........

One was so bad that we got him painting and decorating, as no one would have anything to do with him training wise. There was more paint on him and the floor than there was on the walls.

NO THANKS; We don't have the time to waste and I suspect that my experience is mirrored around the country and the government push to create apprenticeships has a fatal flaw.

Just telling it like it is in my experience and I am not exaggerating. Sad isn't it?

haha sounds like most young lads. maybe another option would be taking somebody a little older on as an improver. More mature and head screwed on would probably do well so long as there willing to learn

Sad that, the work ethic is really going down the tubes.

Also if I were to get made redundant tomorrow I try to turn my hand to anything, and as a car nut building high performance engines would be right up my street. But I have no experience in the field though I would be very keen to learn. Would probably be more useful with electrics, engine management, re-mapping etc. with 17 years electronic engineering / software experience but hey I have a basic grasp of mechanics.

Luckily though my skills are still in demand with my current employer so you won't be getting a 39 year old apprentice

That's exactly what we are losing; " Ken-o " has been here about 5 years and we trained him up into Subaru engine builds. But he is now 66 and wants to retire at Xmas.

He just gets tired and is totally knackered come Friday.

Shame 'cos he is reliable and willing and in all ways a perfect fit for us.

I'd love a job like this, sadly no commercial experience, probably way to OCD and too far away lol, even at 32 i'd actually love to be an apprentice in your line of work...

Logistically and financially impossible i should think

If it was closer i'd almost do a day or 2 for free just to use the facilities when needed, i did spend a lot of time building race kart engines about 10 years ago and have built engines of my own and friends but thats far from 'experienced' in my eyes...

One thing i've always wanted to be able to do is map my own cars and with opensource now and the wealth of knowledge online it's something i will probably attempt in the next year or so just for my own pleasure.

Apologise for the thread hijack David, good luck with finding someone suitable, there seems to be a lot of work shy people out there at the moment

We've been there with that one and to be honest at 66 he is past it. The problem would be the fractured nature of the work.

If he didn't get it done in say the 3 days someone else will have to pick up and run with it. Part of our success is due to the fact that one guy [ out of a team of 3 ] starts and finishes every engine.

That way we can carefully police quality and control and it works well for us.

Thanks for your input though guys. Someone / something will turn up, it always does.

If I were 100 miles closer...

A few years ago I was offered the job of rebuilding a Vauxhall red-top for a MK.II. Escort. I declined when I saw the state of the car, money no object build, and driven like a TWOCer...

The plank blew the engine, bought another, fitted it, and blew that one too, nothing to do with the various types of swarf nestling in the oil cooler then...

I didn't need that much hassle, you know the type

Perhaps you were looking in the wrong places for these "apprentices" i know for one if i lived closer and even if i were payed peanuts. The only way youd get me away from an engine is by prying my cold dead hands off of it

Good luck with the search anyway.

Im surprised that in 3 weeks this this position hasnt been filled. I have very little knowledge of Subaru engines (still learning) and basic knowledge of engines in general (rebuilt a few RS engines in the past), but if I was local I would be willing to be vetted free of charge for a few weeks to be proofed or kicked, but saldy im too far away and I reply on a good salary right now to keep a roof ova'me-ed!

Come on, there must be someone out there thats perfect for this.

I ssume there is a local Subaru forum/webiste David, have you tried there too?

Best of luck.

Rob

PS - Maybe go through an agency?

The pay - as they say - will be commensurate with the ability of the applicant. We pay well here [ for our industry ] and have a happy band of guys that all get along well.

38 hours a week, no Saturdays, well sometimes, but not permanently.

Some pressure of course, to get things out on time and right first time, but nothing extreme and my guys will all tell you I am a good guy to work for.

I would love to do this but only have my yts experience from years ago and self taught skills, I know my way around and impreza engine but feel like I would be in a little over my head if I applied other than that i'm 150+ miles away, As you say chancers would be found out pretty quickly, I can't believe you have had no takers for this though, Amazed in fact considering the current climate,

Gaz.
