Default Whining noise..

Hi guys. My Impreza WRX has started making a whining noise. It's really only noticeable at about 2500rpm in each gear. I'm worried it's the gearbox on its way out. The noise does sound a little bit like a straight cut gearbox on a rally car.
Do you have any other ideas what it could be or what to do? Should I continue to drive untill it gets worse or is it worth changing the gearbox oil or something?

Thanks

After further driving I think it could be something related to either: The drive shaft or the brakes! Hoping it's the latter.

My blobeye has a resonance/whine at about 63mph which seems to be very common and not an issue.

I bought my 2006 Hawkeye from new and it has always had a bit of gearbox whine, mainly on the overrun in lower gears as slow speed, I assumed it was a "standard" feature.

Cheers,

AJS

My Bug also has the whine. I just assumed it was how it's supposed to be. I hope it is because I love the noise and as said before, it sounds like a Rally car.

my hawkeye box was doing the same, was very hard to hear but then got worse and it was the front diff in the gearbox, so just went 6spd to save it going again,

just repaired a 754 box as it had the same noise and split another i had which had been making the same racket - which gradually gets worse im afraid - both cases it was the transfer idler bearing - my advice is change oil and keep level bang on - could last for ages m8 dont worry about it till you cant hear yourself think
all the best

Did you get this diagnosed? My 2006 Hawkeye is now making this noise. Just gets worse as speed increases. Got to the stage where I have to put the radio on really loud as it's driving me nuts. Have checked everything else, brakes, etc.

Thanks,

Hi

My 2006 hawkeye has always whinned in third fourth and fifth to the point that I took it to Subaru when it was under warranty for a rebuild and they seem to think it sounded normal

I just keep an eye on the oil level and colour (check for burning or discolouring)

Thanks

gearbox extension piece bearings where the centre diff is located, they start to slowly break down and drop to bits, the noise will only get worse

My classic had a whine turned out to be the power steering pump worth checking if only to cross it off the list of causes

ditto 9k too with that noise .. mostly found in 6th gear.. at 63+ mph .. however .. it seems dependant purly on throttle load.. the moment I apply the right foot it reacts in time. If i take my foot off completely the noise dissipates. We drive rally cars with great power and better grip... but we all suffer from " Oh god what that noise now" syndrome.

Could you give me an idea of cost? How difficult a job to do?

I'm trying to get the car in top nick before selling, and it seems to be fighting me all the way...

Thanks.
