I get this occasionally, and it has been cleared by "cleaning down" the engine management chip, apparently it picks up odd bits of dodgy data which can make the engine run this way. Worth a try it's always worked for me, should take about 10 minutes.

Thanks Lee, will be looking out for him.
I met him a few months back when I was looking for an STi. Sound Guy, from memory he looks like he could be Rich Burn's brother!

If you intend disconnecting the battery then leave for an hour. This however may screw up your alarm/hifi/clock etc. I havent expereinced this myself but could the problem be boost related ie. overboosting. You could try cleaning the boost solenoid. See here how to do it :

HELP. I'm getting all hot under the collar!!!
My STi3 has been back to the garage 3 times now in my 5 weeks ownership. The problem (above) is now getting more frequent. The last time it went in, the garage changed the plug leads which hasen't helped and I'm now beginning to feel that the problem is more serious. Last night I went on a 50 mile journey and when accelarating (in any gear) the engine kept hesitating then carrying on as normal. The garage are always very friendly and seem willing to help. However, after the amount of times the car has been back I'm losing faith in their Scooby knowledge and expertese. I'm thinking of approaching TSL as they seem clued-up and professional.
I've been out again this morning and the car is still behaving badly.
To top it all the Blitz Turbo-Timer (already on when i bought car) dosen't always time out when i cut the ignition. I noticed a couple of days ago that the boost gauge (built into the timer) no longer works.
Please help as my car is gettin ill!!!
I'll be at THE BIG ONE in Notts tomorrow. (white 4 door).
Cheers
Nick
