Hi All.
I am about to opgrade my turbo to be run by link ecu.
I can buy the vf23 and the vf30 to the same price.
Which one has the least lag as i is for road use?

Regards Skassa

Try get the VF29.
It's a little bit smaller than the VF23 but you get much less leg and it pulls great untill the red line.

Hi
I was thinking of getting around 300ps at approx.6500rpm.
I am with the standard td04 only getting 247ps/5300rpm-407nm/3300
Thats running 1,4bar peak with full hks hiper & 3" downpipe+kn induction standard ecu.
Dont You think the vf 29 is to small?

Denmark,

Just fitted a VF30 to my UK 00MY.

Boost threshold is about 300-400rpm higher than the TD04, lag is also slightly worse.

However by 3200rpm (in 5th) all hell breaks loose and then continues to 7000rpm.

Just added the HKS headers and I lost another few 100rpm in terms of turbo threshold, bit blimey once up and running at 3300 - 3400 it pulls like a train.

The VF29 is good for 320bhp so they reckon. I can't see that type of turbo holding you back from 300+bhp. Very quick spool up too

Hi.
I was just thinking that the vf30 mayby is a stronger turbo as it has bronzebearings.

The VF30 also has a completely new compressor wheel, core and bearings.

All VF23/24/28/29 have the same core.

Hence good top-end flow and better spool up than the older generation (so 'they' say!)

VF30? I could probably vouch for that, however before choosing, one should consider the boost map and boost control strategy they are using.
I have Link ECU , 3-port solenoid and VF23, which gives me circa 290lbs/ft torque and 300bhp (albeit dyno figures ).
But the more importantly, as James states the spool up is pretty key here, you don't want to trade too much spool up for more top end power.
I hit 0.35bar@2.5K rpm, 0.65bar3K rpm, 1bar@3.5K rpm and 1.35bar@4K rpm. This is quite laggy
I am scheduled to get another boost remap, as although my peak torque figure is great the lag/spool up is noticeable. My remap should be able to improve things somewhat, i.e move it back 500rpm to achieve 1bar@3K rpm although I will be rather load/knock limited and I have been lead to believe that an EBC could improve things even further as the Link Boost control is good but not great. Different Mapable ECU control boost differently and some even say that items such as a DAWES device in association with a mapable ECU, can be a good fix.
As James say's, go for a good compromise such as a VF24 or VF30, I believe the VF24 will be better for spool up against a VF23/VF30, the VF23 will have higher peak flow than the VF30 but the VF30 will be the best compromise between them all!

Norm.
