Thinking of buying a 1994 legacy turbo with 99,000 miles. There is a slight ticking noise. Is this normal on these engines? Could buy it for £2700.Is this price OK

Yes Normal but regular oil changes will keep nosie down. If the car has been serviced on time it will be ok. Ps i had my heads rebuilt with new hydrolic lifters: cost £900

Ticking noise is not a problem at all. Slightly worn tappets. I used to have an older legacy and when it needed a service and was very hot it sometimes tapped. The hydraulic tappets cost about £450 if you felt it necessary and could do the work yourself.

As dfullerton says, changing the oil frequently and using a good oil that is not too thin will keep them quiet.
