Has anyone had any experience of belt noise on their scooby, howling when engine speed increases when cold or warm
I Have had the following problems, dont know if they are related
1, loud tapping when cold which would go when it was warmed up, i took it to my dealer and ther diagnosed that there was a problem with the air con pullys, told them of the belt noise and they said they were prob related, got the air con pully replaced by the air con people who told me it was quite a common problem as they had done a few, got the car back tapping cured, howling the same.
Is it common to have to get the belts tightened?
should i go back to the dealer and ask him to sort it?
Any feed back apperciated
thanks in advance

Normally when belts whine it is because they are overtightened, If they are slack they will screech.
To do a quick check, at the midpoint of the longest run on the belt, you should be able to twist the belt easily by 90 degrees with 2 fingers.

This noise has got worse over a peroid of time, if they were over tight it would have been there all the time, would'nt it, unless it is something else

What's your car model and MY?
My MY01 STI RA has a distinctive whine between 3600 and 4000rpms. Have heard it on other STI's as well, within approx the same rev band. Disconnected the 2 belts (power steering / aircon / alternator), but whining still there.
My guess is that its the cam belt, perhaps something to do with the AVCS tensioning / detensioning the cam belt. The noise I get only happens when the car is warmed up, and does not depend on road speed, clutch in/out or gear selection.
It only depends on engine rpm. So far no ill effects except slight irritation.

My car made that tapping noise when cold from the belt too. It needed tightening. After I tightened it the noise went away. Rule of thumb is that you should not be able to twist the belt more than the 90 degree angle. The belt lies horizontally right? Try twisting it upwards. If it goes to or past the 12 o'clock position it needs tightening.
