Question

A fellow Subaru owner I know (my mother-in-law!), has asked me about changing the clutch on her Impreza UK. They suspect the clutch maybe on its way out, as they experienced total clutch failure a couple of days ago, and were forced to change gear without it (ouch!), but since then the clutch has returned to normal behaviour. They've noticed that the clutch fluid has leaked out of the reservoir, and I suspect the clutch fluid has boiled away nicely, but they want to know whats involved in changing the clutch in case it's required.

The big question I suppose is, is it an engine out job ? I know most places will quote around the £400+ mark to change a clutch, plus the cost of the clutch itself. They are quite mechanically minded, having changed clutchs, gearboxes, rebuilt engines themselves on previous cars, but is this job someone should really attempt themselves, or should we leave it to the experts ?

Many thanks.

hi mate, obviously this is only a thought, but i would say that if the clutch went completely, but then returned to normal, that the clutch itself is probably ok. i would have thought that is more likely to be something to do with the hydraulic clutch cylinders/hose, especially since you say leaking has been noticed.

p.s- if you ever do a clutch on one of these, its easier to drop the gearbox rather than remove the engine

Mate,

Axle stand the front of the car
prop off
intercooler off
remove clutch actu linkage
remove slave post retaining pin (through window in the top)
drop g'box x member
pull driveflanges out of box and hang on string
Drop 'box off

Buy my recon flywheel as original prob a bit shagged!

Refit reversal of removal!
