Anyone not using a turbo heatshield?
#1
Shortly after fitting my decat downpipe, my car developed an annoying rattle at certain revs. It looks like it's a cracked heatshield; probably due to the cutting work I had to do to trim it to the new pipe shape.
A couple of people have suggested just doing away with the shield but even though I've wrapped my downpipe, I'm still concerned about heatsoak around the clutch/brake master cylinders and general engine bay temps.
Thoughts/experiences anyone?
Neil.

Hi,
I had my heatshield taken off after a downpipe install. No problems so far with under bonnet temp.. Runs the same but with the added benefit on the turbo spool up from the DP. : D

You don't say what MY you have, but I removed the heatshield from my MY01 as i had to cut the F*ing thing off to change the downpipe.
Someone, no names etc, told me that you didn't have to remove the intercooler, the heatshield needed a 'little pursuasion'. downpipe in question is a scoobysport- you get the gist.
Pete told us that they don't usually re-fit the heatshield on the MY01- i have checked around it after a hard thrash and everything seems a little warm but not really what you would call hot.

I have thought about the turbo blanket, but I couldn't decide on the balance between keeping the heat in the turbo; which would create a higher charge temperature for the intercooler to cool, and allowing the heat from the turbo to escape and heat up the intercooler resulting in the intercooler becoming less able to cool the cooler charge from the turbo......
If anyone understands what I've just said could they please explain it to me

You only lag the Exhaust turbine side and downpipe.
This will give lower intake charge due to lower radiated heat from the turbine. Leave the compressor side alone.
A glowing turbine housing WILL heat up your (topmount) IC because it`s next to it!
Friend with a GT4 can touch the lagged downpipe after a high boost session............try that with a metal heat shield......also higher gas speed through the system if the gas is kept hot as possible......

Neil, I dont think he did say anything. I was jus eves dropping on him anyway
Can't you just weld the turbo one? Its fairly easy to get to and comes off ok. I have a cracked one on the uppipe!! Now thats a bitc$ to get to, intercooler off turbo out the lot. 3 hours labour at least for a friggig rattle. I was also told that IM do not replace parts because the heatshields gone cos the parts not classed as failed what do you think of that!
Cheers

Thanks guys.
I guess lagging or welding will be an option.
It shouldn't take long to pop the heatshield off and check it (when i eventually get around to it) and I'll see what sort of welding needs doing then. If it's straightforward I might just give that a go.

Bob Rawle said it was a really bad idea to run without a turbo heatshield at a meet i went to. It gets to silly temps and the shield deflects it from entering the intercooler and heating pipes i believe.
