Surge in 1st gear
#1
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone might have any idea as to whats causing the problem with my 94 WRX. When floored in first gear the rev's build to about 4000 then the rev needle almost appears to hesitate before jumping 2000 rpm in one go and the car lurchs forward in sudden bust. When you watch the RPM needle you can see it actually stop then leap 2000 rpm at once instead of a smooth power delivery. At first I thought it might be due to a faulty coil but have since eliminated this by replacing them. The car has done it since I first got it and since then fitting a Link and exhaust air filter has not cured the problem. It seems random as to how bad the car does it and sometimes it is non- existant all together.... anyone got any ideas?

Sounds similar to my MY94 UK problem. Floor it in 1st, get slight hesitation between 4,000 and 5,000 rpm. Then it goes like stink.
I've been trying to solve this for about 8 months now and still have no solution. Next step may be to try a different fuel pressure regulator, as I have tried most of the elcetronics.

Hi there Scott yes it sounds like your problem is the same as mine! a deffinite pause around the 4000 - 5000 rpm mark followed by a sudden burst right to the redline. Mine is only noticable in first gear and can be quite pronounced at times and not as noticable at others. I replaced my fuel filter with a high flow after market one but still the problem is there I too might get the injectors cleaned and fit a different fuel pressure regulator soon and see if that brings any joy i will keep you posted! Cheers..

I get the same in my UK95, but it really only started when I had my Magnex de-cat centre and backbox fitted. Again, floor it in first from idle and it pauses at 4 - 5000 rpm then continues blasting to the redline. I posted a thread "Is this overboost?" but the replies were that overboost is much, much more pronounced and would send me through the windscreen!
If I do a full on launch, 3000 rpm and lift clutch fast it is fine as are all other gears. It's not all the time in 1st though. I found it is better now I use Optimax in that the delay and surge is less.

Sweet! Ive been reading this board for weeks now trying to find someone with similar problems.
I've got a 95WRX which has started doing it since it had a full 2.5inch exhasut fitted (D/P through to B/Box) and that's the only mod. In fact the day I picked it up after having it fitted was when I first noticed it, and again it's definately in first, sometimes in second.
Let us know how you get on fullas.
Cheers
