have read about WRX gearboxes taking as much as 400bhp, if you dont rag it everywhere you will be ok but completely on the limit, STI gearboxes can 400 safer

It's mainly torque that kills gearboxes, in particular 3rd gear is the weakest.

about 380 lb/ft is the most your box will reliably handle.

I've been running 350ish and then 390ish bhp (335, then 354 and then 392 lbft torque) for 9000 miles now, still fine, but my uprated clutch is starting to smell a bit

Most of my driving is motorways and country back roads, and I never ever launch it in first etc, although do "boot it" several times in second and third every day.

Mind me asking how much you're paying for the PPG? I might be in the market for one at some point too

mine lasted 10k miles running 320 lbs with 390 bhp, never broke it to be honest just swapped to ppg

not worth doing unless you understand that its a matter of when rather than if you need to replace

knowing the gearbox is only a few good launches away from death take the fun out of it IMHO

Hmm, I need to save some more then .. I have about 1500 stashed away for the purpose of gearbox replacement which I'm hoping will get me a 6 speeder to fit myself once the current box goes, but a straight cut PPG just sounds *so* good

Btw, what are parts like for the PPG? I'm thinking that if I bought a 2nd hand one, would I be able to get spares easily if I then dropped a cog?

Spares are easy to get, the guy who had my car before me some how broke a cog and it was up and running again in no time.

When i took the car off him i had the box rebuilt again and it has been great.

Im trying to get rid of it at the mo though as im driving the car a lot and im fed up with the wine! 5 speed straight cut.
