Wink

I've just had my ECU reset by my dealer at the 12month service on my MY00. He told me to give it a bit of a thrashing on the way home & to try to keep above 5000revs! Just had a grast drive through the lanes in 2nd & 3rd!!!

Obviously the ECU is trying to learn how I drive, but how long do I keep this up??????? just done 25 miles on 1/4 tank!!!! & I dunno how much more strain the wallet can take!

I'd be more concerned about what that's doing to the engine rather than your wallet. There is no need to do anything than just drive normally with the MY99/00. Why was the ecu reset?

I second Bob!

This sort of advice from dealers really annoys me.

Sounds like a very stupid dealer to me Like the ones that thrash new cars from cold and a few miles on the clock and tell you not to bother running them in.

Resetting an ECU for no reason will only make it learn all the ignition timing again, and driving around at over 5000rpm as much as possible will only give you high intake temps, risk of det and probably worse ignition timing than what you started with.

If you are resetting an ECU the best collected wisdom seems to be to drive normally without undue load on the engine but a good mix of engine and road speeds and not revving the nuts off it all the time. What a bunch of lunatics!

When will they actually get a clue what they are doing?

I advised the dealer that I now use optimax! So why has he given me such advice?

No what.............just carry on as normal?

Drive it normally and after 20-30 miles it should be optimum on Optimax. Consider finding a more knowledgable dealer also.

When I picked up my Scoob new in `99 the dealer told me that he has to take all the new cars out and as part of the PDI red lines them in 1st and 2nd, this sets the ECU! (this being standard, approved practice - he said) My car had just 9 miles on it when I took delivery! Is this why Scoobs have such tappety engines!! As for knowledgable dealer - forget it, never found one yet who knows more about the car than I do.

Maybe we have found the "real" cause of big end failure ... what a load of tosh !! As mentioned just drive normally, it will sort out itself. Earlier cars benefit from the reset but you still just drive normally afterwards.

Yep i was told when i bought my MY00 new, he said, "Oh you wont last the thousand miles before giving it some nuts, they can take it anyway we never bother." hence to say i did take it steady!
Thats probably why i saw two of there demo cars on a trackday with less than 500 mile on the clock! a UK300, P1, wonder who owns them now?

Madness...

Dealer just reset my ECU for me (MY96) and said just drive it like normal....

I always try and warm my car up slowly and let it call down before switching off...

Just makes me cringe to think of someone thrashing a new engine..
all those rough metal edges and new rings scaping and chaffing...
