Longer 5th into an RA box ???
I want to put a longer 5th gear into my RA box and just wondered if i could make use of the UK2000 gearbox i have currently split in the garage.
The RA box is from an MY96 and the UK box from an MY98.
How easy is this to do, is it simply a swap of a selection of gears?
Cheers
Chris.

Its easy to do I've just built mine similar.
93 RA 1st - 4th then i used my original 95 WRX 5th.
I'm massively impressed with the RA box acceleration is obscene, the only slight downside is the bigger drop to 5th.
Its livable but takes a little getting used too.

In simplistic terms,
First remove the casting that the prop goes into (this one contains the drop gears)
Then remove the next one (this contains the center diff)
Once these 2 are removed you can see the 5th gears and selecter.
Its then a case of knocking the pin out of the selector fork and removing the fork.
You then undo the nuts holding the gears on and pull them off, one is splined and comes off easy, the other is keyed on with a woodruff key and requires pulling off with a puller.
Obviously thats a very simplistic explainantion but it gives you an idea whats involved. Not much really and i think its very do-able even with the box on the car.
You will need a couple of gaskets too but they are only 4-5 quid from roger clark or dealer.
casting that prop goes into that requires removing.
casting that center diff is located
Any questions just ask fella.

Hmmm, I think with the 96 RA box you might be better fitting a Jap WRX 5th.
You current 4rth to 5th rev drop is circa 2000rpm if you change up at 7000rpm
With the Jap 0.825 gear it will drop circa 2750 with 70 in 5th at 3185rpm
UK 0.738 will drop about 3200 with 70 in 5th coming at around 2850rpm
Rough 70 figures as Tyre size will obviously have an effect.

scooblue have u had an ra? i dont mean it in a funny way but an ra box is good for the twists but once on a long straight or on a motorway the engine is reving high just sat at 70mph and then 120mph top speed when i have an engine that is capable of much much more, im currently trying to get a company to make me aset of straight cut gears at the same ratio as the ra gears

Have I had one? yes for the last 4 years. I see what your saying about the 2.5 just as it's starting to find it's feet you run out of gears. What we need is a 6 speed version of the RA box.
Changing up to 5th I can feel a slight drop off so I would not fit a taller 5th gear. What about a Quaife box?
I live were there are only b roads so it's perfect for me.

as i sed i meant that in no funny way at all, wen i was having mine built a guy had just had a 6speed put on his ra and he took me out, it had lost all its own charactirstics (if thats how u spell it) so that put me off that idea i thort of a ppg but dont want to spend that sort of money....................so if ur a builder reading this sort something out and i guess u would make a few quid off us guys!

recently had a longer 5th fitted to my 95 wrx .on the down side the rev dropoff makes 5th useless anywhere but on fast a road or motorway. engines
really only on song from 80 plus mph(3500rpm). on the plus side its quiet at 70 or so.
can now also manage high 20s fuel consumption if im good, which i reckon is pretty good for an 18g 2litre.
