Question

Anyone got any sensible ideas on this

I notice from Well Lane on Sunday, my graph shows approx

100bhp @ 3000 rpm and then
320bhp @ 6000 rpm

same case with torque.

mine doesn't hit max torque til over 5000rpm.

I know that the turbo obviously causes the big rise but below this there really is BOG ALL.

Is there any way of boosting low end power and torque other than nitrous or other such things which would involve internal work I would have thought, maybe different cams??

Obviously fitting a smaller turbo might be an answer but I don't want to sacrifice top end power.

Twin uneven size turbos is a clear cure but I ain't got that kind of dosh!!

Is there anything I can do or is it that you can't have big power AND a good bottom end too?

What about Anti-lag or a rebore?

Any advice appreciated

Rich

Optimising ignition advance low down or leaning it out a bit low down are all I have heard of in terms of mapping. But then it sounds like you have already done this with your controller?

I'm sure some clever people will chip in and I'll be wrong

controller wont be as accurate.

You can alter fuelling to generate more gas to spool turbo quicker.

You can fit a smaller hybrid turbo with a modified wastegate to flow lots more up the top.

You can fit 421 headers with a smaller diameter, which will spool the turbo quicker, but you will lose some top end power.

You can fit a 2.5 inch exhaust, but I am not convinced this is entirely accurate.

Cheers guys,

Already got the 2.5" exhaust Adam but the other ideas are interesting.

Keep 'em coming.

Rich,

I've had the same problem for the last two years. If I look at my torque curve it starts to rise sharply at 2700rpm but doesn't max till 4800rpm then is nice and flat until it starts to drop off at 6300rpm. It would seem that without spending a fair amount of cash there is very little we can do.

Something that was suggested to me was to modify the inlet to the turbo to remove that nasty bend and fit a VF23 which is well suited to our models and will have a better spool up. Although I decided against this as the cost outwayed the gains.

Cams have always seemed like a good idea to me but I've not spoken with anyone about this and it will again be expensive.

Has anyone out there changed there cams on this model?

Rich,

I would look closely at the boost controller and it's control of the wastegate.

Using a Dawes (with a Link ECU), the boost control is far better (and comes in much earlier - it feels much more like a large-capacity normally aspirated engine).

Maybe you can adjust the wastegate as well ?

Thanks

Gavin

Adam, is the resolution of the fuel/ignition controller inadequate for remapping the timing and fuelling low down and you are better off with a stand-alone ECU? Is it because it is one of these controllers where you change sensor data from MAF and angle sensors like the Unichip and you really want to map it absolutely?

Cool

Raise compression ratio and/or cylinder capacity.

The above would work and is not expensive compared to your idea of running anti-lag all the time.

Hmm, I feel a block failure due to over-thin cylinder walls waiting in the wings.

It could well be worth starting technical threads like this on bbs.22b.com and the forums atwww.i-club.com as well.

do a search under torque or 2.2.

The discussions of the benefits of increased capacity and monster engine potential have been covered at length.

Hi Steve,

No, I haven't but as you know, I sold my house last year and came out with a few quid. My fiancee still thinks the money is in the bank waiting to be used as a deposit.....ooops!

I'm going to have to get a Saturday job or summat!

I've got a thirst for power now that I just can't quench.!!!

Cheers
Rich
