Ok, I've done lots of searching around and found lots of useful info, but would really appreciate your thoughts on this.

I have a MY02 WRX Wagon with 50k on the clock, it's bog standard, I got it from a dealer about 3 months ago. After a few weeks I noticed a judder, which I reckon came from the clutch, when pulling away when the car was cold. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does can be quite bad.

It seems to happen a bit more recently, sometimes even when warm, but there seems to be no pattern to it.

Having read the forums, I tried a 4k revs takeoff and it still seem to happen. I also see that this may be considered normal in Impreza's, however I would say this is bad enough to be embarassing when carrying passengers.

There are no other symptoms of clutch failure, and a lot of the time it drives very smoothly.

So, my questions are:

1. Should I just put up with this and consider it normal behaviour?

2. If it is a genuine problem, does it sound like a clutch issue (and therefore replacement) or just a case of getting the flywheel skimmed?

3. If it is the clutch, should this be sorted under the extended (proven) warranty I have or does it count as wear and tear?

4. If I have to replace the clutch at my own expense, would you go standard Subaru, or something like an Exedy organic? Does anyone know rough costs for these 2 options?

I appreciate any help you can give.

Ive only had my car for about 5 months, my clutch judder started about a month of buying it. Now my clutch is stuffed slipping at 3000rpm.

Ive bought a clutch kit & a skimmed flywheel. Just waiting to get it fitted.

its a common Fault, i would say nothing to worry about they all do it from cold.

my car is 95/6 ish. i get judder all the time no slipping though. the bite of my clutch is very near the end of the pedals travel, it took a bit of getting used to. there is never any smell either. is judder a sign of the clutch dying? sorry to jump on this thread with a question.

Mine does it every now and then, when it happens I just slip the clutch slightly and blip the trottle. Never gave it much thought, just thought thats what their like
Looking on here it looks like a design issue and replacing the clutch might help. Personaly I'm not worried and can live with it

02 WRX mine has done it since it was 6 months old. As other people have said, build some revs and slip the clutch a bit to get rid of it if it bothers you. But mine only does it for the first couple of minutes of a journey anyway.

Update - tried another quick start, initially seemed to make no difference, but since then no judder for 5 days - looks like this cure may work!

Scrubs the clutch plate deposits off the flywheel....
I do one serious launch every month, just to clean it up officer.....

Mine used to judder a fair bit when cold...I first thought it was the clutch that was on its way out ....But a friend of mine told me its very common and a quick start will sort it out for a while.....This was true!
But it returned again pretty soon after, I lived with it juddering on cold mornings for a while then I brought a new exhaust and decatted the center, all juddering has now stopped!! ??

Maybe the extra couple of horses the exhaust made has somehow helped?

think i need to do this to mine, right then quick starts, are we talking about holding the revs at 4k and just stepping the clutch

Mine juddered all the time inc down changes, a new uprated Exedy clutch and lightweight/skimmed flywheel from API fixed it. Been in neally 2 years with no issues.
