I was looking at an interesting Intercooler today at the NEC show

Radtec Racing Radiators had on display TMICs which they claim were 30% more efficient than an STi item. The core was denser, wider and almost 50% thicker (depth)

They certainly looked the business with polished alloy tanks (easily impressed huh) looks apart, the construction was first class and they stock them for all models including twin inlet types.

The I/Cs mount to original brackets and connect to OEM hoses.

The price was 320 + vat.

Seemed to me like a reasonable mod for those of us a bit hesitant parting with circa 1k for a FMIC.

Just wondering if anyone has tried one ?? Or similar upgrade to top mount ??

It really depends which of the Sti intercoolers its 30% better than, up to MY96 was the worst performer, next is MY97-98 with the MY99-00 being streets ahead of either of the others, so if its 30% better than the first two it still won't be as good as the MY99-00. Nothing will beat a FMIC at keeping charge temps down although improvements can be made against the equiv. top mount with aftermarket uprated items depending on what is compared to what. If it works it is a good price being virtually 50% cheaper than most other aftermarket top mounts.

I believe it is the same CSA as the MY00 but the improvement comes from the thicker/deeper core apparently.

My concern was that the air flow captured by the scoop may be the limiting factor for a top mount ? The area of the inlet being less than 1/3rd of the cooler area.

IMHO rolling roads are probably not the best places to test top mounts either, a FMIC is always going to show an exagerated performance increase on the rollers where real driving air flow cannot be replicated.

I was wondering if anyone had before and after charge temps with an aftermarket top mount (driving on the road results) ??

Matt

They are in Cannock Staffs. 01543 572229.
They may have test results themselves, I only had a quick word with their main man as he was dashing off.
Just that I would prefer an independant view not sales biased views !!

Bob,
As your in this thread I'm keen to pick your brains. Just how efficient is the MY01 intercooler. Is it worth focusing here for any improvements.

I know the STi has a larger unit and bigger scoop. I also read somewhere that it has also been angled differently. Are any of these changes worth carrying across to the MY01?

Ninja,

The Intercooler on the P1 is an STi V IC so *if* the claims are true then yes....
