Default Legact auto box , slow to engage drive

I have a 2000 legacy outback 2.5 auto
when puting box into drive in can take upto 30 sec to engage drive , then it is fine until you take it out of drive and back into drive.
This makes three point turns take a couple of mins
It is fine when you put in reverse.
I have checked all fluids and there are fine.

Any ideas
