5th gear knakered? Help
Hi guys
I changed from 4th to 5th and a huge crunch happened, then there was no longer a 5th gear. The gears were fine before.
The other gears seem ok although a little stiff now and again, but there is no drive at all in 5th, it pops in ok but nothing at all just engine rev and a clunking noise.
Does this mean new gearbox or linkage arm???
Thanks
Ian

Sounds like you have done 5th gear, what year is the car? the early ones had a smaller woodruff key on 5th which tends to break and then damages the two 5th gear kogs.

Reason i ask is becasue 5th and reverse are on the same selector fork, if reverse has gone too its likely to have just sheared a fork or selector rod which would be alot less costly to replace.

If your going to fit a used box(if you can find an RA box with the correct code that is) you want some kind of warranty or you may as well rebuild what you have. Were are you based?

Same box as mine, there is a good chance you have broke the key on 5th gear- they were smaller on the early box's. This then damages the two 5th gears. New they are around 260 quid for both gears plus the cost of the rebuild. I pulled the box out myself bought two used gears and then had the box rebuilt using only what was needed, ie not full rebuild. It cost me 60 quid for the gears and 125 for fitting them along with 3 new sycnros plus 35 for the oil.

I am quite worried about buying a new box and it not being any good, but then was thinking of maybe getting a stronger STi box or something????? Or maybe getting it rebuilt ???
I really don't know what to do. Just had a full engine re-build then this happens
