I have had a uk spec gearbox in my wrx running that power for over 12months now and have done well over 100 drag launches and its been no problam at all, I have just had my engine rebuilt and a big garrett put on and its running 380bhp/400lbft at the moment. I am getting a ppg kit in about a month so we will see how it takes the extra power

What he said!

Ns04 (My99 with 319lbs ft torque - that's what kills the gearbox, not bhp. Still going strong a year later touchwood etc..)

Don't know about Tony, but I'd personally calculate 2k for parts and labour to install a 6 speed replacement from a new age which will very comfortably handle that level of torque. Not much point in pay under 1k for a reconditioned one that may or may not last is there?

That explains it a bit better. He never mentioned a 6 speeder. 2-2.5k for a company to supply and fit a 6 speeder yer.

I'm sure you could get a recon jobbie supplied and fitted for much less, but you risk it giving way again and only having to pay the full wack to get the job done once and for all! If the car is std power, or you drive like a saint then this may well be the way to go and save yourself a lot of money. If you're comfortably over 300ft lbs on the UK 5 speeder and want a box that WILL take the torque and some abuse then the 6 speeder or PPG is the way to go I'd argue.

Of course, if you can fit the parts yourself; more beer money!

Certainly heard(and know of) a couple of UK boxes taking 400+hp. Of course it does really depend on driving style. How longs a bit of string?

I had 300lbft in MY98 UK and lasted about 9 months and 6 launches (then broke when it was snowing?!)
Got PPG now so I will take all the stick I can throw at it. Cost around 3k for the box

On the same topic, would the standard 05 wrx gearbox last long with around 300bhp similar torque too?
are they the same basicaly as the ones in the classic or are they stronger?

£2k-£3k range was for 6 speed to PPG.

As for running std boxes with big power....not much point having big power and taking it easy on the box....a less powerful car used to its potential would be quicker IMO.

True, but that said bob, not everyone wants to do drag launches which are the hardest things on the box. 320 lbs ft in my classic driven (and mapped)with mechanical symathy seems absolutely fine and I dont really worry about it at all. That said, you won't catch me dropping the clutch at 6k!

They have a stronger gearbox casing (phase 2)and will seem stronger due to age/fatigue so its back to the same answers as above.

"Exactly, scoobyslammed from here had an sti with 450-500 bhp with standard gearbox, its all about the way you drive it"

Bollox! The very first time I pressed the loud pedal with over 350lbft it exploded. I was in third and eased on the gas - pop!

As Bob says, what's the point of nursing a powerful car?
