Default lost 3rd gear...

After a big bang on the dual carriage way in 3rd and some boost ... a rattle was heard under car / felt throu gearstick, and when selecting 3rd gear stick moved easily to the right position... but there was no gear!

Is it safe to drive like this - I drove 5 miles to get home !

Suggestions for repair - 2nd hand box, rebuild this one, fit PAR/PPG or similar uprated 1/2, 3/4 gearset, or STiV/6 box.

This was a 4.11 diff jap import wagon bos, TY752VB3CA box.

Thanks for any help!

Neil

PS guesstimated at around 400 hp, 350+ torque on TD05/06 turbo, 850 injectors, etc.

Montythegod in Kent Scoobies has just doen the same gear today. Its his second box. The last one was not worth economic repair.

Basically, your state of tune is too much for worn 5 speeder.

Your choices are:

To keep replacing with second had boxes. - Relatively cheap if you can make one last 12 months.

Get a repacement box rebuilt in a hope it will last a bit longer

Six speeder (a lot of money hassle) or PPG Gear set (same sort of money, but noisier).

Or, detune your car slightly or have it remapped to adjust the power in the places in the power band that would put strain on the box.

Whats your budget?

Hi Hol, yeah, think I have been lucky with this, the original 'box with now 109000 miles on it ... and a couple of scooby shootouts done when I had 363/325 and 1 more this last 9 months at the elevated power / torque.

Prefer a PAR/PPG uprated gearset and full box rebuild/exchange box ... but do NOT want straight cut gears as it's a daily driver!

Budget .. OK to £2k, a little more if needed, less preffered! Car is 1994 ish but not much original left bar shell and gearbox innerds! Bits are worth far more than the car!!

But I want it right and to last, and allow use of the other mods ( engine, suspension, clutch, brakes ) etc.

Probably throw it at Zen and see what Pavlo can do with it.

Not sure, which gears fail the most? Mine was 3rd, and not even playing hard at the time ! Definitely geting better 3/4 gears, and think I'll stick with helical all through and get PPG 1/2, 3/4, and billet selectors, with the uprated PPG syncro set ( is that included in kit ? ). Keeping 5th as std is good idea too.

Costs a bit, but I want it to be fit and forget!

Do not really want a noisy gearbox as it's still a daily driver ( 300 miles a week to/from work, kids running around etc.! ) despite being an early classic!

Cheers

My car is with Paul currently for the straight cut gear set with billet forks and it is a daily driver. The straight cut can take more abuse so why not just get a bullet proof box that you won't have to worry about in the future, regardless of power and driving style?
I understand it is quite noisy, however if you are running a straight through 3" system the noise will not be much more unbearable, I doubt you will be able to hear it over the system at full chat!
Either way helical or straight, I would suggest a PPG rather than a 6 speed or a standard exchange/repair.

I had a straight cut box in a Mk2 Escort.

If you want an indication of how one would sound, try and get a ride in one of the original (Pre BMW) minis. The noise is very similar.

That or a Morris Minor, theyve got straight cut 1st gear.

Im thinking about entering this lovely minefield at the moment and wanted to go for:

PPG straight cut 1st/2nd
PPG helical (or however you spell it) 3rd/4th
with billet selectors and uprated PPG syncro set

Cant imagine how much thats going to cost though! Just waiting back to hear from David at API

Just had a quote back from David at API, very helpful chap.

For this:
PPG straight cut 1st/2nd
PPG helical (or however you spell it) 3rd/4th
with steel/alu billet selectors and uprated PPG syncro set
will cost....

about £2700+VAT but including fitting.

Start saving then....

PAR/PPG work well, but you have to justify the extra £1000-1500.

6 Speeds are also strong and much cheaper. Weigh a bit more and different ratios though. iirc new six speeds have better ratios.
