I've just fitted (as in yesterday) a K&N induction kit to my MY97.
Fitting it went ok (followed Chiark's guide) accept the coolant pipes seem to be touching the underside of the filter? Is this correct?
Lastly, I went out to move the car this morning and it didn't seem anywhere near as keen to start? Is this a trait of induction kits?

Re: starting - check the cabling on your MAF sensor? I doubt that the MAF's involved in starting, but it's worth checking. Also check that you haven't disturbed the TDC (crank position) sensor cabling. Just have a quick check over the area that you've been to check that you haven't inadvertently put strain on any electrical cables, or slightly unplugged 'em.
The coolant pipes shouldn't be touching the filter, though they may be very close to the black tube which holds the MAF.
Hope this helps.
Nick.

Cheers Chiark.
I've checked the MAF. It seems to be connected fine. Not sure where the TDC sensor is?
I'll double check the routing of the coolant pipes.

LOL... Still undecided about the sound it makes. The g/f hasn't been in it yet since it's been fitted. I know she's not going to like it

Just have a general once over and check nothing's loose
Re:HKS... Hmm, I wouldn't fit one due to MAF failures on MY99 and MY00, but you should be ok on an MY97 because they use a hot wire type MAF as opposed to hot film type - the film is more delicate...

I've recently taken K&N 57i off mine and am swapping it with an ITG panel - mainly cos the wife and passengers don't like the noise and they can hear what I am doing with the "loud" pedal. I think I've lost a bit of power at the very top end. Fuelling is slightly richer - no bad thing since I am running up to 18PSI.

John, I don't like the way passengers know the instant touch the loud pedal either. I'm going to leave it on through January though. See what impact (if any) it'll have on the old fuel consumption etc.
Rikki, I'm not sure mate. If there is an improvement it's only slight. What you can't fail to notice (and nor will others) is the sound you can make with the car. I do like the way that if you take it easy the car sounds normal, hence driving through town doesn't get embarrasing
