Default wrx gearbox what power

Just trying to find out as much info as possible before i choose between a bugeye sti or a bug eye wrx. Chances are if i get a wrx i will modify it to get a safe 260-70 bhp. Problem is the gearbox, ive heard its the weaklink but would it handle the 260-70 bhp that i hope for. Or would i be best trying to get a standard sti...

Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated

PPP takes the wrx to around 260 with no gearbox worries so I don't think it'll be an issue.

You need to worry about torque not BHP, that's what breaks the box.

yup that would be fine, but then you hear of some that break with just above standard power, mine was abused at about 380/380 and was perfect when it was removed.

Just managed to kill my box running 340bhp and 300ft/lb torque since August last year (prior to that running 260/260 for 18 months or so).

Contributing factors are likely to be track day at 50 degrees C, last session of the day, short gap between the sessions and trackday tyres (Bridgestone RE55S).

Don't know the extent of the damage yet, but I couldn't select third or fourth gear, but 1,2 and 5 worked OK (helped get off the track at least!) even if there were horrible noises while moving!

Hope that helps

Neil
