As I have continuing hesitation problems with my MY98 STi IV, I have decided to reduce the oil level in the sump and clean the waste gate solenoid with brake cleaning fluid (would 'switch cleaner' also work?).... but, which is the wastegate solenoid? I believe it is item 'B' below but confirmation would be appreciated!

Also, how do I actually take it apart to clean it?

Steve, A is the Wastegate solenoid. Follow the pipe on the left of the picture to the other end, un-do and spray loads of brake cleaner down there, and go for a quick blast (USING BOOST).

Thanks for the reply. Just goes to show how much I know (NOT!!). Right, I will follow the pipe and do the deed. Err .... what is the other device just for the record!

I hope this works, it really is spoiling my fun.

Hmmmmm using boost did you say - I like that thought ...

Steve,
B is a solenoid chageover solenoid valve that opens the MAP sensor to atmosphere to perform an internal self test for the standard ECU.

Dan, Steve,

Thank you both for your input. I propose draining 1/2 Litre of oil out of the engine, then spraying the cleaning fluid into the solenoid pipework as suggested.

With luck this should improve matters, although much research this weekend on the subject of hesitation has brought up a totally different theory for the problem, namely that the knock sensor is picking up stray 'noise' and giving faulty data to the ECU thus altering the ignition timing randomly!

Hmmmmm I guess it could explain some of the facts but this looks like an argument that will run and run!

Steve,

Sound like you *may* find that an earthing kit will help.

That will at least reduce the chances that noise is corrupting the sensor readings.

AJBASEBLOKE,

Earthing can certainly resolve certain kinds of 'noise' but is there a specific 'kit' available?

If not do you have any further information on what should be specifically earthed?

Steve,

Before anyone accuses me of trying to sell these things again, I will say that I and all my buddies have done them DIY!!

Sorry, had to put that in as someone accused me of that on another thread...

Anyway, there are a few "levels" you can do - from basic (which I have done - just 4 points, plus beefing up the body to battery connection) all the way to amazing (which is basically OTT, and includes everything from the spark plugs to head lights ).

Look under DIY and earthing...

And please remember I am not saying it is a cure all (or will give you 2000hp), but it certainly seems to help smoothness among other things.

Maybe try a search as there was a thread on the topic pretty recently I think.
